Video Games Industry Isn't Recession-Proof
Posted by Regeneration on November 17th, 2009, 08:53 PM

As if Electronic Arts' announcement earlier this week that they'd be cutting 1,500 jobs wasn't proof enough, here's a handy visual reference for just how not recession-proof the videogames industry has turned out to be.

The chart above comes by way of Business Insider, and as you can see, it tracks the total videogame sales from September 2007 through September 2009. The first massive nose-dive following December 07 -- nearly a full year before the economic crisis really took place in September 08 -- could probably be attributed to a natural decline of sales post-holiday season.

But as you can plainly see, the heights of September 07 have yet to be seen again. And after a slight bump upward even during the 08 holiday season, overall sales year-to-year are still significantly down, including a 13 percent drop in October sales compared to last year, Business Insider reports.

meh, cry me a river, if they want to get through rough times they should do like everyone else and drop their prices instead of expecting people to pay some rediculous price tag like 60-70$ for a game

releasing some more actually good games wouldnt hurt either

the game industry isn't going to suffer any more now than the movie industry did during the great depression.
no matter how poor people become they will always be willing to squander some of their money on entertainment.

the situation is predictable. the prices for games will stay high and the content will suffer because the developers won't drop prices but they will drop wages for their programmers and artists so they will continue to thrive and people will continue to buy into their bullshit no matter how horrible the games become.

however sales may suffer to some extent only because even the dullards will get sick of paying 60 bucks for some bullshit like "Gamer Hero", eventually...

sem, especiall one with a decent ammount of gameplay, if their charing 60$ it had better have atleast 20 hours or some killer multipleyer, but im not huge into multiplayer so the longer the game the better the chances of me paying for it

Here in Mexico games can cost as much as 1100 pesos, thats arround 85 USD, add this the average paywork for a day is from 45-80 pesos, thats 270-480 Pesos a Week (25-35 USD weekly) and i still have no problem buying games, i just spent 1000 pesos on DragonAge... i think video game industry can and will survive no problems, you are all just a bunch of whinning cheap crybabies, with a USD Salary i could buy 1 game each week, saddly i still dont buy that many games, i get arround 1-2 videogames a year, only if its the most anticipated RPG of the year... the rest Torrents does just fine.
