| | | Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Review | While first-person, war-themed titles are ten a penny, Operation Flashpoint turned the usual world of health bars and ammunition and medical kits scattered around like candy on its head, instead bringing us all of the gritty realism of war in a sandbox environment (before people started calling them sandbox environments), complete with a range of vehicles and realistic weapons at your disposal, but more importantly armed with the knowledge that a bullet in the wrong place would kill you instantly.
For all of its bugs and problems, Operation Flashpoint proved to be a compelling (albeit difficult) title to play, with its Cold War setting proving to be just as much of a breath of fresh air as its take on the war-themed first-person shooter.
Today, the Operation Flashpoint name returns to our PC screens via a brand-new title, subtitled Dragon Rising. Is it worthy of the franchise that spawned it? More importantly, is it even a true Operation Flashpoint sequel at all? The answer to that second question is "No, not really" - While Codemasters (the developers of Dragon Rising) own the Operation Flashpoint name, the original game was in fact developed by Bohemia Interactive, a company who went on to produce a couple of ArmA titles (as well as an actual combat training simulator used by numerous armed forces worldwide) but whose input is conspicuous by its absence here.
So, Dragon Rising is shorn of the development team that gave birth to the Operation Flashpoint name, but Codemasters is still a high-profile developer by any stretch of the imagination, so what direction have they taken the franchise? Let's fire up the PC version of the game (which is also seeing a release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) to check it out. Be sure to bring some bandages though, things could get pretty bloody.

it also has a distinctive "smell" of console port | | | | Honestly im kind of getting bored of these military/tactical shooters, theyve just been done to death, like the WW2 games, its time for something fresh | | | | no demo? that sucks.
i tried arma2 (borrowed the cd from my neighbour) but hell... after install i had THAT many bugs... graphics was crap looked like a game from late 90ies! | | | | Quote:

directx nope - windows does.
game nope - as its not my cd-key (i do not go online with a game which is not mine - only test it local without internet connection)
i knew arma was bugged, but i thought they will not do this again (shame on bohemia software) | | | | Crappy graphics?
I don't understand. | | | | crappy graphics full of bugs (version 1.0) trees were only 2d-sprites other sprites disappeared after 5m... looked like a aplha version to me.
ati 4870 1gb should do it... so its not my hardware.
tried OF R yesterday - hell i tried the first level like 6 times... always failed. i only achieved to distroy the artillery of PLA. taking the town took me out every time i tried (on NORMAL)
for me aiming was hell - propably i try again today with lowered settings (2650x1600 too much? - it was auto-set by the game) | | | | and they used havok not physx, thanks to codemaster | | | | Quote:

game patch can be manually downloaded and installed offline
even if ARMA2 is bugged, it's still better than OF2: DR
I finished the game and was in shock because it has only 10 (or was it 11) missions and the only helo you get to pilot (for 3 minutes or so) is the UH-60 "Black Hawk" and it flies like hell (you better let the AI do the flying)
you don't get to drive a tank, ar APC, even a AH-1 SuperCobra ... nothin' |

I didn't fired up ARMA2 in a while now | | | | Is the Arma a free game ?? | | | | | | hmm it looks interesting, sadly no playng for me , i need mobo , but cant afford it now | | | | Well, maybe you win the contest and manage to exchange that CPU for the parts you need | | | | | | Even though ARMA II is a true sequel of Op. Flashpoint...
I'm still looking forward to trying Op. Flashpoint 2 out.
The only major bug I had with ARMA II was the
goddamn mouse smoothing. It ruins the game.
But the latest 1.04 patch apparently fixes it...
Turning off Post-Processing helped me out though.
...& graphics for ARMA II were excellent btw... :P | | | | IF any1 is deciding to buy Arma/Arma2 or OFDR, dont even dare to look to the DR side, its a pefetic excuse for a milsim, its just wrong, even Cod 2 rapes it trou all sides, its absolutely not realistic, I play arma, yes its buggy, but download the latest patch, its much better, OFPD is just good graphic and smooth control thats it, all the mission ares scripted like shit u will se enemys in the same spot everytime, the AI is dumkbest thing of all the game, the controls of vehicles sux beyond beliefe, I wont even start talking about the lame physic, also dont even try the Mp if u want Mp play Coop Multiplayer is fucked up to the heaven enemy team will spawn all over the map you as well, sometimes in the water, sometimes 5 meters away from enemy players, multiplayer is not balanced at all: Imagine this, u start with 5 jeeps and 2 apc while usa has abrams and 2 apc's and then usa team spawns 5 m away from u, u spawn and instantly get killed, no1 plays the game seriosly, its very easy to complete the game On HC in SP but impossible in Coop the AI is just all seing they will see u every1 any1 time, This pefetic game is not even worth the OFP title, I wouldnt even say this is an arcade its somewhere beneath all the milsim games, I sy just dont look to DR direction go and buy arma2 of the original OFP theyr far better than DR, and dont listen to console fanboys when they say its very releastic, they say that just becasue they just got off Halo :/ | | | | All this new policy of making ultra realistic shooters doesn't appeal to me. What happened with fun shooters? Realism takes away all the fun | | | | Just been having a play with this....big problem with my ATi 3870X2.....you get terrible stuttering....even more noticable when panning around with scoped weapon or binoculars and objects are quite close in the foreground....no matter what settings or resolution you put it on the only way to get rid of it is to turn off crossfire....trouble is if I do that have to use crap settings to get reasonable frame rates....Oh well will have to wait for a driver update to fix it....somethimes wish that ATi worked closer with developers like Nvidia do.....how do you report issues to the Ati driver team? |

| Quote | | | | | Just been knocking this crossfire problem around on the game forum.....if you remane the exe file to GRID.exe then the game runs perfectly with crossfire. | | | | It probably has something to do with those profiles. | | | | I completely agree. Realism to nausea. If you like to run your character "realistically" trough multiple kilometers of map in a mad, cartoonishly dull slog/sprint reminiscent of Desert combat's m,arathon run between oposing bases. I guess codemasters figured that since it took them a year to write, it should take us cramp-inspiring minutes of holding the run keys down just for the pleasure of himping pretend a$$ through all their breathtakingly standard scenery. I'd give them their 20 quid back for the six or so lost hours of my life. Play checkers until CoD MW2 comes out. Bleeeeech! | | | | ofp1 is much better then DR
ever get the feeling you've been cheated | | |
