Windows 7 XP Mode Goes RTM
Posted by Regeneration on October 3rd, 2009, 01:01 PM

Windows 7 is shaping up to be a dynamic release. With many aggressive pricing options such as cheaper OEM prices and student discounts, the new release aims to please.

When debating what version to buy, one of the most compelling features of the Professional and Ultimates versions is Windows XP Mode. XP Mode runs using Microsoft's Virtual PC software, but unlike many virtual machines, it blends unobtrusively into your desktop, with XP-compatibility Windows happily living alongside Windows 7 windows, with no obtrusive differences.

Microsoft made an exciting announcement yesterday -- the Windows XP Mode has finally hit RTM (Windows 7 hit RTM several weeks ago.). The finalized version close resembles the Windows XP Mode Release Candidate, which aired in August. For business users, XP Mode provides an innovative way to remove the headache of software compatibility. With it, virtually any software that can run on Windows XP, can run within Windows 7.

Except it lacks most hardware access so you can't really use it for anything other then a glorified word processor.

Well you probably won't need windows XP MODE , cause almost all programs running on XP usually run perfectly fine on windows 7.

If this is anything like VM, it's definitively a good thing. Even though, something like this would have probably been a lot more useful on Vista.

Virtual PC doesn't install on Home Premium too, but VMware does.

Oh....thats a shame.....just bought the premium version.....I use microsoft VPC all the time
I always browse the web via an XP VPC to prevent malicious software.

I'm not familiar with VMware....are there any free version and which would be suitable for that?

That's really bad...I know they tell you that for xp mode you need the Win 7 ultimate but they don't tell you they are disabling their VPC software from installing on Home premium I sometimes run linux vpc's as well.

Actually have now put in a complaint to MS about this....it does not say in the win 7 version comparisons that they are disabling VPC in the home premium version...and it has been free and available in previous Windows operating systems.....XP mode has nothing to do with running a Linux VPC.

Actually that is not correct...just downloaded the 64 bit version of Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 from here:-

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

And have just installed it on my Win 7 Home premium 64 bit system...and now have an XP VPC running within it.

Whilst you are installing the VPC software it warns that you are not using a compatible O/S...but just ignore that and continue (it does the same when you install it on XP)...installed and is now running my very own "XP Mode" in Win 7 Home Premium.

OOPs just remebered I've sent MS a $hitty email
