Windows 7 Review
Posted by Regeneration on August 12th, 2009, 01:04 PM

What a difference a few years makes. When Windows Vista debuted in late 2006, I was full of questions: Windows Vista was a big, messy Windows release, delayed time and again, and suffering from too many features and too little cohesiveness. This time around, things are clearer. Windows 7 is less ambitious than its predecessor, but also a better product. It suffers from none of the aimless feature bloat that plagued Vista upon its release, and none of the aimless uncertainty that followed Vista's five-plus years of development. That the public reaction to Windows 7 has also been universally positive--another sharp contrast with Vista--is also gratifying. Windows 7 deserves the accolades, and it's one of the strongest entries in the Windows family of products ever.

And that makes reviewing Windows 7 difficult. This is a near perfect software release, that rarest of upgrades that improves on virtually everything about its predecessor while losing nothing of serious importance. Yes, there are nits. Sure, I'd have liked to have seen a few components of the OS turn out a bit differently. No software is truly perfect. But you don't have to qualify the successes of Windows 7 as you did with Windows Vista. Windows 7 is just excellent, with no caveats attached. And Windows 7 isn't excellent within the context of its reduced development cycle and the resultant reduced expectations. It's just excellent, plain and simple. No ifs, ands, or buts.

So now that I've completely blown the premise of this review, which will be published over the time leading up to Windows 7's general availability in October, let me at least frame the conversation that will conclude, inevitably, with discussions of unparalleled greatness. Because even though I may have just provided you with a peek at the end of this epic review, there's still a lot to discover.

Here, in Part 1, I'd like to put Windows 7 in perspective. How has the world changed since XP first appeared eight long years ago? Windows 7 is being born into a sharply different environment than its most popular predecessor. But the parallels between XP and Windows 7 are many.

In Part 2, I will examine the all-important task of picking the proper Windows 7 product edition. This is again an issue because Microsoft has saddled its users with too many choices, though there are certainly fewer valid possibilities than before. I've already provided the most thorough and comprehensive Windows 7 product edition comparison available anywhere, but in this review I'll make the decision process simpler than ever, especially for those who don't want to wade through giant charts.

Honestly, I think if it wasnt for the negativity surrounding vista "windows 7" would be called "Service Pack 3"

I dont think the cost justifies the switch, especially since by all accounts that Ive heard so far w7 benchmarks slower then vista for gaming

I have used vista64 and now 7 RC 64, and for normal user they are the same.
Most differences are cosmetic. Yeh, truly. SP3.

Stop listening to what you hear.

Windows 7 is faster in nearly all Dx9 and 10 games.

what hardware?

these specifically some performance issues in nv's drivers because of a memory leak in the 3D Stereo driver.

various hardware configs, but both nvidia and ati seem to be benching slower on w7 64 rtm then vista 64, I havent been able to do my own benchmarks so I cant confirm, ill probably give 7 a shot when its released

It may be what the 16399 updates address.

Just installed today, basically the same as Visa with some UI changes, some of which are very frustraiting. I can't understand why people think this is better than Vista! Like everyone else said, if XP was Windows NT 5.5, then Windows 7 is Windows Vista SP3.

At least Vista felt like an upgrade, with the new search functions and streamlined interface. I think it was better than XP despite the fact it was slower and I always found the file dialogues quite annoying (improved slightly in 7 as there's a link to Computer in the file open dialogue).

Regardless, basically the same as Vista and not worth paying any money for. You have been warned.

Pft, suuurre it is close to vista but some of the background optimisations are like the difference between XP vanilla and sp2... seriously.

Vista had some good ideas but mainly ended up messing things up, the search feature was meh... the sidebar nothing new and just something more I turned off (please someone give me a good use for it), things ran much slower and the graphic interface was ugly (so was XP but my designed skins fixed that)

But I would have put up with all of its problems if only it wasnt so blastedly hard to get to a collection of settings or the places I need to fine tune settings... oh and the loathesome scrolling start menu.

Wait where am I going with this? um, windows 7 not that great but seems so compaired to vista and will recive the backing it needs and as such will kill XP eventually (lol maybe)

PS. anyone who didn't jump into msconfig and try and turn off UAC was just stupid or liked having their computer question their every click including the click on the click because of the questioned click... well except it is confusing that search was run at first... but hey.
