Microsoft Responds to Obama's Xbox Speech
Posted by Regeneration on July 20th, 2009, 12:17 PM

President Barack Obama's admonition to parents to "put away the Xbox" has drawn a response from Microsoft. Obama made the remarks on Thursday evening during a speech he delivered at an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the NAACP.

Here's what the President said: "To parents, we can’t tell our kids to do well in school and fail to support them when they get home. For our kids to excel, we must accept our own responsibilities. That means putting away the Xbox and putting our kids to bed at a reasonable hour. It means attending those parent-teacher conferences, reading to our kids, and helping them with their homework."

And here is Microsoft's response, as reported by the Associated Press: "We agree with President Obama that it’s a time for families to work together so that kids use media in ways that are safe, healthy and balanced. Xbox 360 is the only console gaming system that has a timer feature allowing parents to set time limits for their kids, as well as parent controls to enable parents to set limits on what their kids are playing and watching."

Yes, but many parents are morons who just refuse to accept responsibility and this is waht Obama was talking about.

Well i wuld not see any problem in his speak , If he used "game console" instade name a specific company .

I was 100% shure that Microsoft will fight back .
Ahh and i know why he dint say Playstation , its just not l33t

i think the term xbox has replaced playstation as the generalized term for a console, like rollerblades, rollerblades is a brand their not rollerblades their inline skates, or vicegrips again thats a brand their real name is locking pliers, theres many cases of this and i dont think microsoft should have taken it so literally

I agree on skates and other thingis , but dont think that Xbox is used as term for console . Well not in Poland mate.

But come to thinking maybe in the mind of computer/consoles uneducated people.

it sure is here, anyone that doesnt play consoles automatically calls them 'xbox', i think thats true for just about anywhere, poland included, if you dont play consoles or pc games then chances are when your refering to a console your gonna call it an xbox

In Poland for years more popular was playstation but now popularity of xbox 360 and ps3 is balanced.

Well at least xbox was smart enough to inform parents that their console actually has a parental feature!

1st its this, next it'll be no more xbox. Just watch.

Well poland is not the USA. I agree with blindartist, earlier (in the U.S) playstation the common name for a console (for parents & non-gamers) and today its xbox. Microsoft should have just kept their mouths shut, and should have been happy to the fact to what blindartist said! They are the nr1 console at the moment in the states.

lol, hit the nail on the head.

Microsoft is g@y, Obama is stupid. Nuff said.
Btw it was totally pointless of MS to mention their parental control feature, as the truly caring parents will always "put away" the Xbox instead of taking advantage of it (except maybe content control), while the non-caring won't give the faintest fuck about it.

I agree that Obama has a little "overspoken" moment, but what could he use instead of "Xbox" word, "portable video game system" ? A little too long don't you think. (At least he must have mentioned PS, Wii as well). So looks like the USA president made some kind of antiADS of microsoft product which is, whoops, registered as a USA corporation, :P

fuckboxes belong in the trash.

I don't get where many of you guys are coming from, what blindartist said above more then fits the occasion. xbox is a synonym for a console in the states (I would presume) and as such Obama mentioned it. I wouldn't bet on it that he even knows about the other consoles at all. It's jsut the "xbox".

Anyway, if we want to nitpick, he merely said "put away the 7 year old gaming system, being the xbox". He didn't even mention the x360 lol

yes, he is using xbox as a generic reference for all video games and any sort of media that keeps kids up at night and not studying.

some of you folks must be children yourselves to allow this cloud the meaning of the statement.

get to work kids, it is time to get your shit together for the future!
