I've played somewhere around no more than an hour of the original Call of Juarez. It wasn't that the graphics were bad; actually, it was one of the first games to take advantage of the powers of DirectX 10. It wasn't that the sound was bad either. It was the gameplay and the map design that really bothered me. Since finding my way around the game was a tedious and difficult task, I abandoned the game for one of my all time favorite westerns video games, Gun.
Now, several years later, I'm starring at the sequel of Call of Juarez. Just as many movies have done lately, Ubisoft and Techland have made the sequel to Call of Juarez, Call of Juarez Bound in Blood, to actually be a prequel storyline wise. Sometimes prequels work really well, sometimes they fail miserably. In video games, the rate of sequels being a success or a complete failure is even more dramatic. And on top of everything, Call of Juarez is part of a genre that has been struggling in the video game market: the western genre.
It seems that if we're lucky, we might see a western game being released once a year, but realistically speaking, is more around once every couple of years. Will Call of Juarez Bound in Blood reinvent the genre and make the Wild West popular once again? Will the multiplayer servers be filled with gunslingers from around the world? And most importantly, did I just get suckered into spending fifty dollars? Well, I better saddle up and ride into the sunset.
