| | | Activision May Pull PlayStation 3 Support | Bobby Kotick and a partner bought the once-struggling Activision for $440,000 in 1991, at a time when it was losing $30 million on $10 million in revenues. Now the world's biggest independent computer games company, it has a market value of $16 billion (£10 billion) and operating profits of $179 million in the first quarter on sales of $981 million.
Activision overtook Electronic Arts last July when it was in effect taken over by Vivendi of France in a deal where Vivendi injected World of Warcraft into the company for a 56 per cent stake. With such success, Mr Kotick, who runs the business from Beverly Hills, can probably get away with saying anything, which, soon enough, he does.
The target is Sony, the once-dominant hardware maker. “I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,” he says.
It is not a very subtle hint, although Mr Kotick says his company paid $500 million to Sony in royalties and other goods last year, which “probably still worked out at 400 per cent of the profit they made”. Actually, Sony's games division lost $597 million last year, and Mr Kotick seems to think it may have to risk more losses if the £299.99 PlayStation 3 is to develop.
“They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.” Ask when and he says: “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too.” Sounds like Sir Howard Stringer, Sony's chief executive, is going to have to call Mr Kotick pretty fast.

even with the hi price, PS3 still sells; I bought one 2-3 weeks ago
Activision is looking to make money out of everything, look brutal legend trial, assumed pay2play on COD mp series
and consoles are about exclusive games, playing on PC is far better | | | | Sony is a joke, they dont give a shit about their customers, have horrible cs, dont try to resolve issues with their products and price gouge like crazy, id be happy to see them humbled a little | | | | You're reffering to microsoft and its xbox there. | | | | Quote:

I recently bought a 2M HDMI cable here in India for Rs.3500 = $70+ and it wasnt working took it back to the place I bought it and guess what sony does not cover any accessories under its warranty in India.
Is it the same everywhere ??? I think I am going to take them to consumer court for this. | | | | Sony distributor is also horrible. | | | | whatever, you all forget that xbox live is a payed service while internet playing over psn is free
as for customer support, remember rrod
p.s.: do you actually think sony will cut prices just because activision is unhappy | | | | If they kick Sony, I'll be laughing my ass off.
Where are all those console trolls now, telling me how the console development process is less expensive then it is on PC. Sure... | | | | Quote:

I wouldn't pay Microsoft if it asked me to pay them money to create software for their OSes. If Activision is losing money for supporting PS3, they should cut it off. | | | | I never understood this royalties deal - like, it's a great honor to develop for consoles so developers should pay the manufacturers? lol
I don't see how could anyone ever force something like this on PC. | | | | Quote:

so what the ps3 has to do with all of this, and tell me how exactly activision is losing money publishing ps3 games?
afaik ps3 is the only console that can't run pirated games so the publishers get exactly the amount of money from sales
if they're unable to publish ps3 games, who the fuck cares anyway, I say again ... playing on pc beats any console | | | | Don't forget that consoles suffer from another affliction - second hand games and renting. | | | | where I live, I can't rent games; only buy them at full price or search for discounts
remember that consoles are not made by 3rd party games but by it's exclusives (halo, uncharted, gears of war, god of war) | | | | Quote:

All I'm saying is that you can rent (not everywhere, of course) and get used games for less money. Let's say you buy five games and I buy some other five games. After a while we exchange them and we both end up playing ten titles while the bought only five. To the publisher this is pretty much the same as piracy. | | | | Sony's ps3 games needs 5x's more people working on 1 project verses xbox and wii . this = 5x's the salary and investment into the games + royaltys on using bluray + bluray disc cost + 5x longer to develope vs dvd and wii & xbox development .
All this equals less return on investment for a smaller user fanbase thats flatlined .
Companies cannot afford to spend $15,000,000 into a game only to barely break even after release date . This goes against everything business is about . Activision cares about activisions profit to hell with sonys pofit sony should be reading the warning signs before the end slams them from behind . | | |
