Most of us tend to overlook our choice of input devices, which is crazy. In addition, hardcore gamers and those with ergonomic requirements will testify that keyboards and mice are arguably the most important components. Most keyboards and mice are also relatively cheap compared to the rest of a system, so it grinds my gears to hear that people spend over £2000 on a kickass system, but only spend £20 on the cheapest mouse and keyboard. Come on guys and gals! Would you buy an Aston Martin with vinyl seats and a plastic steering wheel?
Logitech’s G19 is probably the best (and most expensive) multimedia keyboard on the market. Aimed specifically but not exclusively at hardcore gamers, the USB-based G19 (£131) is a visual treat and a joy to use. Sure it’s the size of a small family car - without the wrist rest the G19 is approximately 9 inches in length, while at its highest point, the LCD is approximately 2.25 inches. If you’re tight on space, the G19 isn’t for you. But if you have the room and want to treat yourself, carry on reading.
The first thing you’ll notice about the G19 keyboard it the built-in colour LCD panel, making it the first Logitech keyboard to feature a colour GamePanel LCD. The tiltable, 320×240-pixel display displays in-game information for more than 60 games, as well as things like VoIP communication data, a clock, your computer’s CPU load, or even pictures and videos fed from your hard drive (source folders and directories are managed using the supplied driver utility), Flickr or YouTube.
