Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 Review Roundup
Posted by Regeneration on March 3rd, 2009, 12:42 PM

Today is a very sad day for hardware enthusiasts as Nvidia taken its one-year-old GeForce 9800 GTX+ and rebranded as a new GeForce GTS 250. You would expect hardware reviewers and the press to be upset and to punish/bury them for such unethical and misleading move; so we won’t see anymore lame rebrands like these in the future, but instead for some reasons - most of the reviewers actually liked/praised it. Here is a list of GeForce GTS 250 reviews from around the world:

DriverHeaven
Guru3D
HotHardware
Overclockers Club
PC Perspective
Techgage
The Tech Report
TweakTown

I remember when Bugbear released the PC version of FlatOut Ultimate Carnage, I asked a good friend of mine for his opinion on the game, he told me: “What a lame bunch of losers, it's pretty much just FlatOut 2 with new textures added”. So to be honest, I don’t have any GeForce GTS 250 around, but if you ask me what I think of it... I'd say: “What a lame bunch of losers, it’s pretty much just GeForce 9800 GTX+ with new stickers added”.

So what do you think about the GeForce GTS 250? Is it good? Is it lame? Feel free to share your opinions with us in the comments below. You don’t even have to be registered.

But that video card has existed for about 3 years now. I think that's bad. As it's basically borderline false advertising.

why do they even bother? the review should be one line "Refer to 8800 review"

Guru3D and Driverheaven just lost any semblance of credibility they had left in my eyes.

LOL, can someone explain to me the ****ing point of these reviews?

One observation: The "GTS 250" has gone through a die shrink. So it should run cooler than my "old" 8800GTs and draw less power. Still that would only give me 256 Steam Processors compared to something like the 275GTX with 240 on a single card. The problem is that we all know SLI doesn't always give you 100% performance increase. In some cases it's only about 40%. And with a 275GTX selling for less than 2 GTS250s, I'd say these cards are for the Uninformed! Even the 192SP 260GTXs offer a superior value.

I dare say it, but it would seem that the increase was limited more by cpu then anything as SLI on the Core i7 platform seems to definitely double the FPS.

Ok, but what game are we talking here? Some games do great with an SLI rig, others don't work at all. Now I've set up most of my SLI rig again (just need to get the second video card back out of one of my other computers - which will happen some time tomorrow). So I plan on overclocking that setup, a Q9450, and we'll see how much difference that makes. (That's with a pair of G92s - so it's basically the 65nm version of these GTS250s with slightly lower clocks.)

But if they don't do that well, compared to my new GTX275. I'll get another 275 and use the old cards for Dedicated Physics. My bet is on the GTX275. Still I'm willing to see if it's close... See they're both clocked at 650MHz and the GTX is clocked at 666MHz. They both have 1GB of memory and the GTX has 896. And Combined they have 256 Stream Processors and the GTX has 240. And I can probably clock the C2Q to around 3.2GHz, so both CPUs will be running the same speed.

We'll see... I guess I'll have to load up something like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect, or maybe some Call of Duty 4, and UT3. Just don't ask me to bench Crysis, cause I don't have a copy (never have!). I don't buy games that don't play well. And I'm not a pirate.

im talking any game you throw at it., some of the newest titles gain from 10-15FPS using SLI with i7 over the SLI on a C2Q system.
