Amazon Launches Game Downloads Store
Posted by Regeneration on February 4th, 2009, 07:39 AM

Today Amazon is pleased to announce the beta launch of the Amazon Game Downloads store, their first step into the downloadable games space. Loaded with an ever-growing roster of casual gaming titles for your PC, the Amazon Game Downloads store features more than 600 games on day one, all priced under a tenspot at either $6.99 or $9.99. As a bonus for exploring our new Game Downloads store, for the next week they are offering three free, full-version games: Jewel Quest 2, The Scruffs and Build A Lot.

If you miss out on this launch offer, not to worry – every game in their store is available for a free 30-minute trial. They could tell you loads more about the range of games, and all the standard Amazon features you’d expect, but instead they will just say this: go play. Since this is a beta launch, you can expect two things: 1) Their Game Downloads store will continue to evolve over time, and 2) they are interested in your feedback on how they can improve it.

These game download stores would be cool if the games were actually considerably cheaper then in store, but their not, the prices are typically exactly the same as in store so whats the point of downloading it, not even having a box, manual (not that you ever use em, their more like trophies) or any other goodies that come with some games. your wasting your bandwidth, your time, and not even getting a physical disk and yet they cost thesame as retail box's, come on

Did Amazon look at Direct2Drive, Steam, ImpulseDriven, and a couple of others and go...
"How can we take that and make it worthle...we mean cheap."

They should have lined up some actual games instead of the bargain bin tossaways, which yes, a couple of them are fun, but it is not going to draw anybody in.

The last time I checked Direct2Drive, 90% of the games were only available to the US. For me, Steam is the best digital distribution source. You can redownload your games, you can back it up and everything.
