AMD Cuts Phenom II Prices
Posted by Regeneration on January 21st, 2009, 12:20 AM

AMD reduced their pricing late yesterday on the Phenom II X4 940 from $275 to $235 and the 920 model from $235 to $195. This new pricing scheme takes effect immediately. In fact, pricing at most of the e-tailors already reflect this decrease as we burned a hole in our wallet ordering a few retail samples for upcoming articles. We discovered in recent testing that the Phenom II X4 (could we not have gotten a better name) 940 compared favorably to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 and the Phenom II X4 920 was a match for the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 in most cases.

Intel is now pricing the Q9400 at $213, a drop from $266, while the Q9300 will remain at $266 and essentially be phased out. This means the Phenom II X4 940 will be priced slightly higher than its main competition but lower than the Core 2 Quad Q9550, which drops in price from $316 to $266 - a battle the 940 simply could not have won at similar pricing. The Phenom II X4 920 now competes directly against the Core 2 Quad Q8300, which saw its price drop from $224 to $183. On a clock for clock basis, the 920 is a better value overall than the Q8300 at this point.

I want a Phenom II rig. I don't need one but I want one.

AMD just cant seem to get a break with their CPUs - finally they release a chip that has some reasonably competitive performace and then they have to drastically cut the prices just to sell them because of the current economic climate..

the problem with this chip is tht its competeing with older generation chips, they needed to release competition for the j7's not the core 2's, the original phenom should have done that but if failed so they should have cut their losses and moved forward instead of sinking more cash and r&d into a lost cause

im not sure i agree with you, i think strategically this might have been a more profitable option for AMD due to the current economic problems.

I dont think as many people are going to be forking out the premium cost for a DDR3 core i7 system when they can get a good DDR2 system much cheaper (and the performance of these phenom 2 DDR2 systems is very good also). In addition the Phenom 2 has support for BOTH DDR2 and DDR3 so either way if a consumer wants either memory platform they can still buy a phenom 2 processor and get good performance vs value for money...

Well so far all of this depression stuff is not effecting sales here in canada where holiday sales were up 2% over last year and up 11% in electronics over last year.

Regardless, even if they had wanted to do as you say, the q9400 is still cheaper, and in my opinion a little better, so this whole thing ultimatly is still a waste of time.

If they wanted to actually make some money that needed to release a chip that can operate in the am2+ socket but that has nearly the performence of the j7 at a much lower price, instead of releasing the phenom II which is what the original phenom should have been.

The reason they are in this mess is because they have kept sinking all sorts of money into their junk phenom's instead of trashing them right from the first flop and developing something new

ok at least this part i do agree with..

AMD is still not ready, i will wait for the Phenom which arrives after bulldog, if roadmaps arecorrect it will include SSE4.x support.

Problem is, now amd has put itself a generation behind intel, so unless they manage to leap ahead then they will remain a generation behind, so by the time that sse4 cpu hits the shelves chances are intel will have already released something better then it

Like i say, they should have trashed the crappy phemon right after its inital flop, cut their losses and brought out something new

I really wish they would get rid of the "Phenom" name, to me its just synonimous with 'crap' now

From what I've seen the majority of people that are buying Phenom II are upgrading from: 939, P4, K8/K10 on existing AM2+ motherboards. For an initial release stepping the Phenom II is fantastic, don't forget it took kentsfield/yorkfield a new stepping to become the OCing beasts they are today.

Im not denying that its a decent cpu, but is it too little too late? as far as im concerned this cpu is about a year late, can they catch intel now? I guess time will tell
