PC Game Piracy Examined
Posted by Regeneration on December 23rd, 2008, 07:26 PM

If there's a single topic that's guaranteed to cause heated debate among PC gamers today, it's piracy and the impact it's having on the PC gaming industry. Almost every gamer you speak to has a strong opinion on this topic, ranging from full support for piracy to total condemnation of it. In the past year in particular this issue has really come to a head, with one major PC game developer after another stepping forward to point to piracy as a clear and present danger to the industry.

As a long-time PC gamer, I have to confess that I've become extremely frustrated with reading the numerous discussions and articles on piracy. PC piracy and related topics such as DRM seem to have become so shrouded in illogical excuses, hysteria, scaremongering and uninformed opinions that having a sensible discussion on the topic is virtually impossible. While it's true to say that it's very difficult to obtain completely accurate and conclusive data on piracy and its impacts, it doesn't help that there are a range of vested interests deliberately spreading misinformation on piracy-related issues.

You can read the entire article at TweakGuides.

This guy has negative attitude. His “drop the DRM hysteria” thing is non-sense. I’ve lost two games by that shitty DRM just because I reinstalled my OS. PC gaming is indeed dying as 80% of the games are nothing but buggy ports.

Of all the games currently installed on my PC only one of them is a port (and a pretty decent one at that). PC gaming is totally alive and kicking, Piracy affects consoles and it's easy to do, cheaters are everywhere and DRM is retarded (and DEFINITELY (mark my words on this one) a future feature for consoles unless we stand against it).

Alive and kicking? 2-4 good games per year is totally pathetic.

It's more than that and good games last a long time. The only thing worse than console syndrome in a PC game is an actual frickin console.

Yea i agree with unix, there are a fair few good games that come out for the pc each year, your beeing rather negative yourself rege :P dont beo ne of thoes people that hates everythint because its got a bug here and a bug there and call it a bad game because of it

anyways, the only one that should drop DRM is the damn developers, it does nothing, there never has nor ever will be a drm that isnt cracked within 48 hours of relese by some 12 year old kid, they need to get rid of it, save themselves money and int turn drop prices on games which would effectivly increase the appeal of actually buying them

Im all for buying games buy I never buy them at release, 50-60$ is bloody highway robbery, ill wait till their down to 30-40 after a few months

Personally, I don't like DRMs but I am slowly accepting them as long as they don't cause any errors on my computer and if it does cause an error, be rectified easily and free. Also! The uninstaller should be available for the DRM included in the game disk. I don't like DRMs that install themselves and you have to go to their website to download an uninstaller, jeesh.

Securom and Starforce as now the most common used disk based DRM, AND ARE LIABLE TO FUCK OVER YOUR COMPUTER.

Don't believe me? check the forums of some of the games that use them.
