Fallout 3 HD Texture Pack

Posted by Chaos on December 10th, 2008, 12:02 PM

A high definition texture pack for Fallout 3 is now available. This mod is improving the visuals of the game without changing the overall look. Created by several modders from Fallout 3 Nexus. A fast computer which can handle everything on ultra-high is recommended (otherwise you will experience studdering). Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC.

Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.

For 200 years, Vault 101 , a fallout shelter, has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering.

Just download the HD package and unpack the files into the Fallout 3 folder. After that you open the FALLOUT.ini which can be found in the following locations:

• C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Fallout3 (Vista)
• C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 (XP)

Search for the entry "bInvalidateOlderFiles=0" and replace the zero with a one (1). The high-res textures are activated now, although the mod doesn't replace all of them.

Is it just me or do SOME of the comparison screenshots look uglier?

Quote
I just copied all the patch data into the game folder now my game wont start.

Blame reg for not adding installation instructions and then yourselves for not seeking them out.

as though this game doesn't perform poorly enough...

does it really get bad performence? cuz i was looking to pick it up for christmas, from the looks of the graphics it looked like i shouldnt have a problem maxing it out

this game has beautiful artwork that looks like shit without aa, yet performs like shit with aa on my 4850, which plays every other game well.

even reducing settings enough to make the framerate acceptable just walking around outdoors, it's still slow as shit in combat.

and the up close battle action is horrible, you move like you have a stick up your butt and your enemies just manage to be somewhere else between the time you get a bead on them and fire or swing a club at them, it's like they slide from side to side on the ground in front of you while you try to attack, like an underwater-slo-mo-nightmare.

somewhere along the line between the artwork and the execution they dropped the ball developing this.

very disappointing play, tons of inexplicable slow-downs. also way more rpg elements than i like to see in an fps.

Did you do the vsync fix? (It's forced on even if you disable it in the settings unless you either A)Edit the config file B)Force it off in nvidia control panel (or ATI equivalent)

hmm well i guess ill have to find out myself, i was actually hoping this had a fair bit of rpg in it, seeing as its a sequal to an rpg, actually would have been dissapointed if there werent.

Well i guess ill just have to see, havent met the game thats kicked this old rigs ass yet, except crysis but eve nthat i could kinda play maxed out with only minor blippage

i dono, maybe 512mb of video ram isn't enough but this game is slow on my system.

did i mention i get perfectly acceptable framerates in crysis and stalker clear sky @ 1600 with all in game settings maxed?
Quote
thats kinda odd, anyone else experiencing this?

I have a HD4850 and only 2GB of system ram and a E8200 C2Duo and I had no problems running Fallout 3 maxed at 1400x900 (which is the max of my 19" widescreen). Did you update your drivers? or maybe something else on your PC is causing the issue.

As one of the authors (the Terrain Pack) blatantly disregarded with this release, along with A LOT of other overlooked modders, I can only say that this is sheer plagiarism. The original mods were ALL taken from pages on FalloutNexus and then compiled and released. I am a little surprised too that this and many other sites have deemed it OK to post this mod up when without authorship given, it is very obviously a plagiarised compilation. It seems that 'Hits' to the site is more important than the modders who put the hard work in for FREE.

My 2 Cents.

We took this from the other sites. I tried to locate the author/source but I could not find any information such as “How to Install”, “Readme” or "EULA" inside the archive and online. So… since no information was available, I assumed it came directly from anonymous source or Fallout 3's developers or something like that.

I can appreciate that, but consider it, as I stated, a plagiarised compilation that should have no place on this or any site. At least not without acknowledging the authors involved. Imagine somebody 'aquired' your work on physx and posted it around without an acknowledgement of the work you put in? I know 'mods' are free, and we have no legal rights, but morally this is insulting to ALL the modders involved.

However, all that said, you are the only person/ website that has responded to this message and for that I thank and respect you. Furthermore, I would not want or expect you to remove the mod whilst other sites are hosting it.

Best Regards,

NeilMc

I agree with you on this. You guys deserve credits for the hard work. But it is impossible to thank/credit anyone if there isn't any kind of documentation inside the archive. I don’t know about the other sites, but I did checked the archive to see who made it and I couldn’t find any information.

I would like to help you guys with this issue, let me check what I can do. I'm not sure, but I think our source was BigDownload or something like that.

Thank you Regeneration, I appreciate your support here as I'm sure others do too. I'll try and rustle up a list of modders involved over the next few days and let you know here. Again, many, many thanks for your understanding.

(PS best of luck with your project!)

I havent had any performance issues with fallout 3. running intel q 8200, 4gb ddr3 1600mhz cas 7, and a single radeon 4850 512mb with a zalman cooler, running older pata 250gb hd causes a little bit of loading delay but other than that seems fine at max settings.

@ DoomJesus -

STALKER and Crysis will handle way better tha fallout considering they are much smaller oin size, and the requirements for those games are WAY less than fallout.

thats like saying "i dont get it, my Blu Ray of the Notebook wont play on my regular DVD player."
Quote
Actually, some of these problem statements may be justified. I've heard there was an article on Tom's Hardware Guide that talked about this very problem; despite the performance capability of the machine, the player still has performance problems in FO3, and the root cause being something to do with the Oblivion engine which FO3 is built on.

modders are just piraters anyway, you guys all whine and cry about graphics - get a good system and the graphics will be fine...boohoo!
Quote
1) modders != Pirates (modders ~= developers)

2) Mods are for PC versions of the game. PC. This means Personal Computer, not Apple's Computer or XBOX's Computer, it's YOUR computer. It's impossible to precisely say exactly how well this game will run on YOUR computer, but on many people's computers (including one of my 4 year old amd boxes) it runs fine, better even than oblivion. Try it and see. Doesn't run well? Find out why, research it, look at your system specs (no, I mean your real system specs), optimize your OS, fix it.

3) Don't know how to research and understand optimizing a PC? Buy an Apple, or some other computer that works for people who don't care to understand computers, or simply enjoy digital fascism.
