| | | Wrath of the Lich King Shatters Day-1 Sales Record | Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. This eclipses the previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in January 2007 by Blizzard's first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade.
Wrath of the Lich King was simultaneously released in North America, Europe, Chile, Argentina, and Russia on November 13; Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand on November 14; and South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on November 18.
In celebration of the launch, more than 15,000 stores throughout the world had their doors open at midnight to welcome thousands of expectant players. Several of these locations were attended by Blizzard Entertainment representatives, who met players and signed copies of the game.
"We're grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we’ve created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead."
"After a single day of availability, Wrath of the Lich King is already the bestselling PC game of 2008 at GameStop and ranks as one of our top-selling products so far this year," said Bob McKenzie, GameStop’s senior vice president of merchandising. "In keeping with the tradition established by their previous releases, Blizzard Entertainment has again created a product that not only reflects their high standards of quality but is clearly an instant hit with gamers around the country."
Prior to the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft’s subscriber population had grown to more than 11 million players, further strengthening its position as the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. | | 24 Comments | | | 2.8m retards are willing to pay monthly fees. Damn, Blizzard is probably making trillions now. Warcraft 3 was really good. but I refuse to play monthly fees and to play noobish MMORPGs. It will encourage other developers to charge monthly fees now. | | | | what i really dont understand is that wow isnt even really good, I suggested the next expansion be called WoW: This Sucks, but no one listens | | | | You may didn't like it but many people love. All has his own enjoyment and over 10 millions of people enjoy by this way. Did they tell anything to the games that you like or play? WoW is one of the best games of ever. And ofcourse if you would be developing this game the thing that you would do is as the same as Blizzard did... | | | | One day I'm going to open an ex-wow player rehab center and revive all my mates who have been turned into mindless zombies. | | | | lol @ retards. WoW is full of fail, even ex-wow addicts say its full of fail. | | | | Quote:

And i dont know what people see in it. Its just another MMORPG with kiddy haracter deisign , a time eater .
I was only able to play it for one day. | | | | I swear eitehr they put subiliminal messaging or the coated the game and topup card boxes in crack so you gotta keep buying them
I personally though the game was terrible | | | | ok, maybe i MIGHT someday consider MAYBE pay a monthly subscription to play a game, but it would have to be the best game i ever f**cking played and I would have to LOVE it or else I would just boycott it completely.
I played WOW and hey, no offense to those of you who do like it but IT SUCKS ASS.
Those guys at Blizzard must be laughing their butts off all the way to the bank and congratulating each other for doing something totally amazing. They created the sh*ttest game of all time and still managed to make billions of $$$ out of it - its truly mind-boggling!? |

| Quote | | | | | Confidentially I view all MMORPGs as crap and crimes against humanity. | | | | I agree i havent played a MMORPG that ive liked, i was trying to change that too, I was co-owner and developer of a game that we were working on which was called Saven Depths: Legacy of the Deep, was going to be a mmo, basically all the best aspects of rpg's combined with massive co-op naval fleet combat, would have rocked, man i wish we had finished it but a budget of 0 it never got finished, had another one on the go before that one called Avacane but the same fate met it | | | | WoW has a great story and it makes many people love the game. I played WoW for a few times and didn't care about anything. But fans of game are reading books (like that kind), watching all the videoes made by Blizzard, act like they are in game. Maybe doesn't make any sense for us but this is their enjoyment.
Today many people want different things. For example, they want to manage the game and want to finish as they play. I mean, if you choose to be bad at game will result different way and if good different too. Games like WoW let people do it (like Fallout series). Today's games are very simple "kill, destroy, etc". And now it's boring gamers...
Doesn't matter, I won't play WoW because of monthly fee. But there are people who pay. This is their choise and we should respect... | | | | I loved the story about the guy running a "gaming addiction" clinic who says that the people who are "addicted" are really just social misfits. As it also explains why so many WoW players are such total jerks.
As for MMORPGs I'm looking for one that doesn't try to emulate the failed game mechanics of WoW. At least to the point where they don't feel like it's a requirement to nerf any character I start to have fun with into oblivion. So far none of the recent pretenders have been able to do this... And the companies who make these failed products still don't seem to have a clue. | | | | Well the only MMORPG i liked way EVE , its somehow difrent , it take time also , but some how i like it .
Well it have whores that sits on the jump gate , and blast every thing that come out of he gate with one shot .
But every mmorpg have idiot like this. | | | | Quote:

Sooner or later, everyone will copy that monthly fee module. What are they paying for? Blizzard servers? if so - there are many groups out there with enough bandwidth that would love to offer hosting for free or even with in-game ads.
Blizzard is charging $13 per month for their six-month plan and they have 11m users. So they are making $143 million per month! per month. That means $1.7 billion per year. And their hosting expenses, trust me, is about $5000 per month. So sooner or later, other publishers would like to make $2 billion for nothing too. |

ok, yeah it might make the pay-to-play model more popular with developers but it will never get to the point where everyone will charge to play, why? because there would simply be too much competition from any devopers/publishers who made any decent free-to-play game. | | | | If they don't care about DRM, Installation limit, In-game ads, Poor quality, bugs and etc. I doubt they will care about their competitors and our negative feedback. There is no competition when there are two monopolists like EA and Ubisoft. Look at the Live! on Xbox thing! People bought consoles at 500 bucks they are willing to pay more. |

I can see why you're concerned about the PC games industry, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned (as you have outlined) But there are still plenty of us PC gamers out there who love and want to protect our beloved PC games and ultimately developers will find out one way or another that there are plenty of customers (too many to ignore) and the customer is always right, so it makes sense to give the customers what they want.
Today I thought about downloading a trial of LOTRO just to see what its all about, then I looked at the monthly subscription fee @ $15.00 and you know what i did?
I said "FUCK RIGHT OFF!" and closed my browser immediately. |

i do play a mmo called AirRivals, but it's 100% free to play, and it's more of a pvp game anyway | | | | It's a good method to earn more money - monthly fees of course for the game developer. I don't want to pay after buying the original game. But they are going to make this even if we want or not. They are complaining about more internet downloads and less original DVD sellings. So they will tell us "if you want to play you got to pay"...
Nowadays the rising star is Steam I think. In future Steam kind of programs will be more effective. Money and no DVDs / CDs... | | |
