ATI Catalyst 8.11
Posted by Regeneration on November 13th, 2008, 10:54 AM

AMD has released a new build of their Catalyst software suite. This particular software suite updates both the AMD Display Driver, and the Catalyst Control Center. This unified driver has been further enhanced to provide the highest level of power, performance, and reliability. The AMD Catalyst software suite is the ultimate in performance and stability.

ATI CrossFireX Enhancements
This release of ATI Catalyst enables users to verify whether an application is running in ATI CrossFireX mode. The new option found in the ATI Catalyst Control Center system tray, will allow users to verify whether a Direct3D or OpenGL application is running in ATI CrossFireX mode. The ATI CrossFireX logo will be shown on screen when the application is running.

HydraVision Support for Windows XP
This release of ATI Catalyst introduces HydraVision support for the ATI Catalyst Control Center under Windows XP. HydraVision enables users to more efficiently organize multiple applications across single or multiple displays. Highlights include:

• HydraGrid – A new feature found in HydraVision that divides the Windows desktop into user definable areas. This helps users to more easily move and organize multiple applications.
• HydraVision Hotkeys – The ATI Catalyst Control Center Hotkey Manager can assist users to quickly setup and define their HydraVision specific hotkey commands.
• HydraVision Virtual Desktops – Users can configure up to 9 different virtual desktops. This enables users to manage and group multiple applications across each user defined desktop. Application positions, desktop associations and display settings can be saved for every virtual desktop.
• HydraVision Wizard – Using the ATI Catalyst Control Center Wizard, users can configure their HyrdaVision settings with ease.

New Display Enhancements
This release of ATI Catalyst Linux introduces support for display scaling to resize the display devices that support TV timings (480i/p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) through either digital (DVI or HDMI) or analog (component) interfaces.

Performance Improvements
• FarCry 2 – performance gains of 3 to 10% for Single card mode and 8 to 14% in Crossfire mode, with some specific configurations showing even greater improvements. Performance gains were noticed on all Radeon HD4xxx and Radeon HD3xxx products.
• S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky – performance gains of 6 to 18% in single card settings and 10 to 30% in CrossfireX mode. Performance gains were noticed on all Radeon HD04xxx and Radeon HD3xxx products.

Resolved Issues for the Windows Vista Operating System

• During game play for Age of Conan, DirectX 10 may cause the screen to blank.
• Resizing video during playback may intermittently cause desktop video corruption.
• Video playback tearing may occur under Windows Vista 32 or XP.
• Hardware acceleration is not enabled when playing HD content using Cyberlink.
• Catalyst Control Center, Overdrive options missing under Graphics settings.
• Some OpenGL content may not align to the Hydravision preset grid.
• Catalyst Control Center 'ShowGrid' does not display the correct grid settings for the attached displays.
• Gratitude{EF25BC.....} or HydraGrid.exe executables will be shown under process tab after launching Hydragrid.

Resolved Issues for the Windows XP Operating System
• Lower Resolution message displayed when attempting to play HD content using WinDVD.
• Running certain OpenGL applications may intermittently cause the system to stop responding.
• Some desktop corruption may be noticed when playing standard definition video while exiting full screen DOS.
• Overlay rotation failing under Windows XP.
• Hot unplugging the secondary device with Clone Mode enabled may cause video playback instability.
• With Clone Mode and Overlay Theater Mode enabled some video playback may fail to render properly.
• Some corruption may be noticed during video playback on Cyberlink WinDVD7 and rotate desktop.
• Midway Stranglehold may become unstable when run in 800x600 and Dynamic Shadows is turned off.

With this driver, I saw massive improvement in STALKER Clear Sky with my HD3850. I also installed for my laptop's integrated HD3100, and somehow IQ is slightly better I find. What seems to make my desktop lag the most during gameplay is Antialiasing. So I turn it off in all the games and I can get an impressive amount of gaming capacity for a card that sells for about 115$ at my local retailer these days.

Thanks for update

I am not impressed with this release. These performance improvements were introduced in the latest hotfix a few weeks ago. I still can't get HDMI to work on my Toshiba HDTV like it should. The resolved issues list is somehow short and it is not because there are not any bugs. In addition, this set (Driver + CCC) takes 72MB off your RAM.

Stalker clear skies performance has improved, I've also noticed improvements in COD5. I still have the problem of connecting my comp to my Sony Bravia W series full HD LCD through HDMI, no sound but display works fine. I am wondering if anyone else has this issue. I am using a X-Fi card not the onboard, but I tried without the X-Fi also still no go.

You and me both, though I refuse to put any more money in to a Windows machine. A Mac is next on my list.

Anyway, to the point - I have an old Radeon X850 AGP and 8.11 will not work for me at all. I try to start WoW and there's no 3D acceleration. Pretty lame, imo.

Wait for an AGP hotfix driver from AMD.
AGP has been long gone and you should be happy they make such hotfixes, but I agree that it's preety confusing since the AGP hotfixed drivers also run fine on PCIe systems so why not add them right away ?

well agp hasnt been thaaat long gone, theres 3xxx series agp cards, but I wish they would just makit it work, atleast for now, i though the agp bug was going to be resolved since 8.3, maybe omega will come out with a agp friendly version

If your serious about computing i would stay away from mac's, their pretty useless unless you just want it for surfing the web, word processing and listening to music, plus i couldnt stand not being able to customize my rig and upgrade components

Anyways, thanks for the tip, its good to know its not gonna run, im still running 8.4's and kinda hesitent to switch cuz they run quite well
