| | | Nvidia Forced to Disable Chipset PCI Prefetch |

It has come to our attention that Nvidia has ended up in more product trouble, although this time it's with regards to Nvidia's chipset division and it's not related to a manufacturing issue, but rather a law suit from OPTi Inc. As the story goes, Nvidia has infringed a patent regarding to PCI prefetch that OPTi holds and although OPTi no longer makes PC chips, they now license intellectual property. The problem in this case is that Nvidia didn't come out on agreeable terms with OPTi and has to remove the PCI prefetch feature from its chipsets.
The problem with this is twofold. Firstly, it means that just about every single Nvidia chipset from the nForce 500-series and onwards is affected and as such, PCI prefetch has to be removed from all retail boards and every single BIOS upgrade that contains the PCI prefetch code has to be removed from the web. This also means that all Nvidia partners have to release BIOS updates for every single Nvidia motherboard from the nForce 500-series and onwards.
For the consumers, this means that they'll get very poor PCI performance, so if you're using any PCI cards in your Nvidia based motherboard, don't upgrade to the latest BIOS, as it will reduce the performance of the PCI bus. This isn't going to be popular with a lot of users out that that have already upgraded their BIOS, as this "feature" has already been implemented by some motherboard manufacturers going back a couple of months.
You can read the entire article at Fudzilla.

| | | | 24 Comments | | | I say we start stockpiling on bios's for the mainboards and store them somewhere safely.
However, im sure theres a few of us about who can add the prefetching back in xD | | | | My M2N32 bioses are stored if anyone should require them. | | | | And down the drain they'll go. | | | | Nvidia chipsets are garbage anyway. Just another reason why I will never own Nvidia. | | | | with the recent talk that they were quitting the the chipset market...wonder if this will put the tin hat on it. | | | | what talk? i never heard anything, sounds like bullshit to me. | | | | Quote:

"sounds like bullshit to me"... fits that description. First off google the title of this post and then try this... http://sanjose.bizjournals.com/sanjo...22/daily8.html
Second, update your NVIDIA Motherboard bios... and return here to discuss the results. ... oh I almost forgot to tell you to bench your rig before and after the bios update. | | | | sounds like bs to me, just because VIA quite doesn't mean crap.
VIA chipsets were shit anyway | | | | Quote:

Be sure to update your illegal NVIDIA Motherboard bios "moron". LOL | | | | i only use modified nvidia bios's anyway. | | | | Quote:

isn't that a case of the pot callin the kettle black? Your just upset that he isn't a nvidiot fanboi........P.S. I heard that they lost their licensing for the next socket as well.....this i just find amusing.... | | | | i don't particularly care what he is, im not a fanboy of anything unless 3DFX is considered. | | | | Quote:

"Monday, September 22, 2008 OPTi gets $3.75M arbitration judgment against Nvidia Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal Related News OPTi Inc. said Monday it received a $3.75 million judgment in arbitration over licensing payments by Nvidia Corp.
Palo Alto-based OPTi (OTCBB:OPTI) said an arbitrator ruled that Santa Clara-based Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) had continued to use OPTi’s pre-snoop technology for five quarters, and according to terms of a 2006 license agreement should pay OPTi $3.75 million plus pre-judgment interest.
OPTi said it is investigating whether Nvidia owes payments for other quarters.
The parties had entered into the license agreement as settlement of patent infringement claims that OPTi had brought against Nvidia. The license agreement provided that OPTi was to receive quarterly royalty payments of $750,000 commencing in February 2007 and continue as long as Nvidia continued to use OPTi's pre-snoop technology up to a maximum of 12 such payments." | | | | Quote:

05Nov08 Edit: Seriously n3omatrix, what are you talking about? |

| Quote | | | | | I'm glad to see Nvidia taking a bashing, what with their problems with chip quality and now the licensing problems and ati being much more competitive on the graphics front...Nvidia have been too strong and dominating the game game developers...Surley nvidia's TWIMTBP should have been banned on anti competitive grounds its an example of a major player excluding a smaller competitor or at least making its product less competitive by using its position to influence the market....also I'm sure that nvidia have been responsible for surpression of DX10.1...it would have been adopted sooner and more extensively had nvidia's hardware supported it. Hopefully we will see Ati grow and with the entry of Intels larrabee next year or so there will be more balanced competition which will be good for all.
And a bit more nvidia grief http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...0-deep-trouble |

05Nov08 Edit: Seriously n3omatrix, what are you talking about? | The first part of my post was to say that squall is a fanboi as much as anyone else and has bashed ATI on many posts and really has no room to talk.
The second is that i to have heard that on the next socket , intel is building the memory controller into the cpu (similiar to AMD) and still has not worked out a licensing agreement for SLI..... | | | | Quote:

The problem Nvidia has is that intel have still not allowed them a licence to make a chipset compatible with their new quick path interconnect that core i7 uses so technically nvidia won't be able to make chipsets for this generation of intel processors. | | | | I stand corrected Techno....... Thx 4 clearing that up for us.... | | | | | | Quote:

ATI sucks, quite literally, its fine to have good hardware, but if your drivers don't work right, then you're fucked.
Windows = OpenGL fails on a number of simple extensions
Linux = Drivers are nonexistant, literally the drivers don't fuckin work at all. | | |
