Permanent Fanfix for Radeon HD 4800 Series
Posted by Regeneration on September 4th, 2008, 07:16 PM

If you own a Radeon HD 4800 graphic card and still using the stock cooler, you’re definitely unhappy with the noise/temperatures. The Radeon HD 4800 stock cooler is not that bad, the problem is the predefined fan control table on the BIOS. We expected AMD to come up with a BIOS update to resolve this issue, but unsurprisingly we were disappointed. The good news is... Ray Adams has updated ATI Tray Tools and included full support for the HD 4800 series.

As the screenshot suggests, you can now use ATI Tray Tools as a permanent fix to resolve this fan issue. We are told that there is currently no relationship between Ray Adams and AMD’s PR/Developer Relation team. Ray received a HD 4800 sample as a donation from supportive users for his project. You can grab the latest beta build of ATI Tray Tools from the link below.

Thanks to Ray Adams for the efforts.

Well, Im not sure about this news value. You can do the same with rivatuner also..

Your better off just editing your existing bios and manually changing the fan thresholds etc so that you never have to use software to fix your fan problem. I've modded heaps of ati cards and set my own fan temp graphs etc they still run very quiet at low temps but speed up the fan so that the card will run happily around 75 degrees instead of around 90-95 like factory. If anyone's wanting their bios fan settings changed let me know. Email desultory@hotmail.com

i already have mine permently fixed its called teh profiles oO

AUto loads at 100% even after i install new drivers.

This and a few other programs work fine for one 4870x2 card. But it leaves all the people running two 4870x2 cards out in the cold. Unwinder and others are working on a fix for this in Rivatuner 2.10. It's in beta at the moment but should be released soon. When it is released, I will post a link to it here for all the people being left out in the cold. Crossfirex users spend the most and get the least. It's a shame really.

Just grab the unmodded bios from your 48x0 card using gpu-z
mod it using RBE and your fans have a permanent fix - no other software needed. After that flash with winflash/atiflash.
Did it to 4-5 cards already and it's easiest way.
You can tweak the fan rotation/temperature table perfectly in there.
go to techpowerup for the needed tools.

I am waiting for someone to release the ASUS 4870x2 top bios before doing any bios editing. Until I can get some decent overclocks (above 800/950) on these cards, the stock fan settings will be ok for now.

drouge : you can always save your stock bios and mod it.
I rather prefer to mod my own bios and don't rely on someone's unknown bios.
Too much too loose with unknown source 3rd party bioses.

I hear you PrEzi, but with the 4870x2 and current bios and drivers, we are basically locked out of any overclocks above 800 on the core. And maybe asus can break these limitations with a new bios. I don't think the 4870x2 top has been released to retailers yet. ATI is limiting our overclocks at this time. You can overclock the bios and drivers but when running a game or benchmark, the speed reverts back to 800 max core. The problem is under investigation.

drouge : problem lies in a 'signature' inside a cards bios.
and RBE has until now a signature for unlocking only 48xx cards no x2 included.
But when you change the clocks manually (without overdrive) in bios - doesn't it work ?
I've OCed my 4870 without the re-hashing of overdrive and my card runs at my modded OC-'stock' speeds.

No, all attempts result in a driver or system crash. At this time, only CCC can overclock all four cores. And only up to 800/950. Amdgpuclocktool will not over clock all four cores. Editing the xml file will not work. It's just too early for anything to work yet. It has a tough bios this one does. It will take someone like asus to crack it. Or the people that make RBE.

drouge : thee are already some bioses fo HD4870 X2 posted.
You can modify clock speeds, just be sure you upload the right bios to the right one (since it uses a double-bios - master and slave). Don't they work ?
Particulary - you could mod both bioses ?

It works fine... but when it come the time to go play games... the games crashes... WTF?!?!?!... think i will wait and stay with the CCC and the profile fan fix
