Crysis Warhead Performance Analysis
Posted by Chaos on August 26th, 2008, 05:41 PM

The test PC was a high-end system with a Core 2 Extreme QX9770, 4 GB DDR3 1333 RAM and a Geforce GTX 260. With the command "r_displayinfo 1” we activated the display of details like framerate, memory usage or the number of polygons displayed (see screenshots). According to the information delivered, Crysis Warhead was running in DX9 mode only.

AntiAliasing was inactive and the resolution was set to 1152x864. In the graphics options we couldn't change anything and the menu "Advanced” could not be accessed. Therefore we don't know about the exact detail settings. The console displayed "Custom” - so the settings did not match any of the presets. We suppose - because of what we saw in the game - that most details had been set to "high”. Since the version was a prerelease one, it could be that Crytek did not optimize it yet.

The section we played began with a long intro video: The hero Psycho scans the area with a binocular and takes out a distracted North Korean soldier with the cloaking capabilities of the Nanosuit. We noticed that - as promised by Crytek - the faces look a lot more details as in the original Crysis. The framerate was constantly above 41. But the memory usage was surprisingly high: According to the command console 2146 MB were in use. In Crysis this value never exceeded 1300 MB. On a PC with only 2 GB memory this scene is likely to cause loading lags.

They said it would be better optimized and less system taxing than the original flop. Not that I care. I might be getting 4GB soon but it's definitely not because of this POS.

anyone runnig 64bit Vista will notice a nice performance gain if they jump to 4GB or better of system memory

I have 4GB running on windows XP x64 and crysis runs at a constant 28fps with everything high and antialiasing turned off. I tried Vista x64 but my creative X-Fi card had a stuttering issue so had to revert back to XP

4gb makes a huge difference in crysis, and the whole computing experience as well. sucks that warhead doesnt sound too "optimized" than i thought it would.

Even when you have too much free ram windows (xp and vista) still uses the damn page file unless you tweak it.

I have Crysis Warhead running fine with Vista Home Premium, on an AMD Dual Core 4400+, 2GB of system memory, and 1GB DDR3 on the video card, 256MB on the sound blaster Audigy Pro. No hiccups whatsoever @ 1280x960 rez, however, maxing out the "custom settings menu" made my puter stutter.
