Gainward’s non-reference HD 4870 gets pictured
Posted by Chaos on August 19th, 2008, 12:34 PM

According to the info over at Expreview.com, this card will share the design with Palit’s Radeon HD 4870 Sonic card and it will also feature the dual-BIOS design. This means that the card will work at either 750MHz for the core and 950MHz for memory when the first BIOS is used or at 775MHz for the core and 1,000MHz for memory when the second BIOS kicks in.

Due to the dual slot design, Gainward has decided to place a DisplayPort apart from default two DVI connectors. The dual fan design comes with two fans of different size, the 80mm which cools the GPU and memory, and the 70mm which blows directly over the VRM area.

I know the card is good, I guess we'll just to wait and see how much the card is going to cost and how quite it is.

Don't bother. Just buy a reference card, install aftermarket cooler of choice and overclock.

I must agree, thats what I did. I bought one sapphire 4850, another one from gigabyte. Then I installed AC Accelero S1 Rev2 coolers on both, and boy do they run good and cool. The best part is, you can place a fan over the VRM that gets really hot with other coolers.

My idle temps are 46/45/50/48, GPU/DISPIO/MEMIO/SHADERCORE, read from GPU-Z. And ambient temp is pretty high now @27C so will be fun to see how cool they´ll be on the fall or winter....

Anyone with a 4850, i recommend the Acccelero S1 R2 as one of the best coolers for the card, because I have tried many with bad results, or not bad, but not great either. These coolers are the best to this date for me. They are big, so will only fitt in tower cases, no HTPC´s im afraid. I dont know how it would work on a 4870.

EDIT: Oh btw, load temps very seldom go over 60c
