Suddenly, 64-bit Windows is mainstream
Posted by Chaos on July 31st, 2008, 08:41 PM

Last year, x64 editions of Windows Vista were hard to come by and seen as mainly for early adopters. This year, with little warning, the tide seems to have shifted dramatically. I noticed the first hint three weeks ago, when I visited HP’s website to check the specs of the new TX2500z notebook and saw that a 64-bit upgrade was available for all models. When I looked at the flyers in last Sunday’s paper, I saw several PCs at Best Buy with 64-bit Vista Home Premium Edition installed, including notebooks from HP and Toshiba and quad-core desktops from Gateway and Dell; the former came with 4GB of RAM and a 19-inch LCD monitor for $750, while the latter had 6GB of RAM and a 19-inch monitor for $830.

Not so strange, the 64bit version of vista is better than the 32bit. After SP1 x64 Vista is as stable, if not even more stable than the x86 version. Plus many ppl have more than 4gb today, so most ppl want use those extra memories.

All i can say is FINALLY!

Not really. There are way too many reports of OCs being more limited on the 64bit OSes than the 32bit ones. Course mild overclockers won't notice any difference.

That has nothing to do with OS but the fact that more slots you use for memory, the more load you put on memory controler meaning you won't be able to OC so high.
2x2GB is the max they sell right now and with some very limited 2x4GB packs at very low frequencies. You use 64bit OS so you can utilize more memory but for more memory you need more sticks and you hit that mem controler problem.
OS has nothing to do with that except the fact it can give you the ability to utilize so much memory.

I have to agree with RejZoR. I am running both Vista64 and XPP64 with 2 x 2GB. Its stable and fast. The limiting factor is the RAM speed.
