Accelero S1 can't cope with HD 4870
Posted by Chaos on July 17th, 2008, 06:52 PM

According to a post over at forumdeluxx.de, Arctic Cooling's Accelero S1 rev.2 paired up with the Turbo Module fans can't cope with the heat produced by the HD 4870. According to the product page on the Arctic Cooling's web site this one supports ATI's Radeon HD 4850/4870 cards.

The problem however isn't with the card's GPU but rather with the VRM part of the card, which gets quite hot when cooled by the Accelero S1. It just seems the VRM part gets too hot without a heatsink and that's it. The situation got a bit better when the Turbo Module fans were replaced by a 120mm fan, but 98.4°C on the cards backside is still a lot. The product page on the Arctic Cooling site also shows that Accelero S1 comes with a special heatsink for the VRM but it is unclear from the pictures if this user has used it or not.

Of course, Arctic Cooling has released a new Accelero Twin Turbo cooler that comes bundled with memory and voltage regulator heatsink and it packs much more cooling power with dual 80mm fans. Still, it's nice to know that you shouldn't try the Accelero S1 without making sure that you placed a heatsink on the VRM part.

You can read the entire article at Fudzilla.

I dont believe that, either he did it wrong or the cooler was some sunday edition. No, I have one on a 8800gt, idle temps are 35c, load under 45c. My 4850 has a Xigmatek Battleaxe, it has 40c idle, 55-60c load. On all of the 4 different temp readings from the 4850, none go over 60c. And this is in a not so well vented HTPC system as well.

Always put sinks on the VRM, better safe than sorry. The lifespan of the graphics card will suffer with those temps. My VF1000 is running silently and load temps are lower than my previous idle temps. Problem with coolers like ac s1+turbo or hr03-gt is that they take up too much friggin space.

I use modded bios. In desktop with 160/500 all is quiet and temps is about 50°C. But when start gaming, vent goes upward and is loud as hell. I definitely need fine replacement for stock heatsink :-)

amm.. I know few people 4870 Accelero S1 rev.2 with a 120mm fan and its works fine.

I have one of these on my 4850 and yes you do need a heatsink on the vrm's! If you don't then you are just going to blast the vrm's to bits. Listen anyone who mods their stock heatsink has to know about cooling what was being cooled by thier stock heatsink. If they don't or ignore the fact that newer cards need the heat dissapated off the vrm's, as well as the memory, are gonna blow their cards up.
This is not the fault of Accelero. This is a users error and thats why it voids the manufacturers warranty. Listen if you have no idea what you are doing then just don't do it!
I actually filed the end of the stock cooler off and used that part for the vrm's cooler as it was designed to do. Yeah it breaks my warranty but I had no other choice since it was a custom made piece. until someone makes a modded cooler for the vrm's on the 4850's and 4870's then atleast for the 4850 this is a good way to cool the vrm's.

Yes you're right. I did it the same way. Just cutted off the passive part of the stock cooler and attached it back to cool the VRM.

However I have a problem with the memory. I did not cean them properly and the 3M adhesive is not working. After a while they simply fall off. I'm trying to fix that with a sticky thermal compund like arctic silver ceramique. Do you thin it will work? Or do I have to bustle som presure making attachment?

No, it will NOT work. What WILL work is to get some Akasa Thermal Compound tape. Get a product called "TIM", which is also made by Akasa to properly clean the sinks. This stuff is also great to clean CPU's and CPU coolers. It will do the job nicely. If you wish to keep the heat sinks that come with the S1 V2, you will have to completely clean off the original tape. That's not a big problem with the TIM, but must be done. The Akasa TC Tape will hold just fine.

I use the S1 V2 on a 8800GT and it idles around 38C. I use a 120mm fan that I plastic-tied to the cooler. (Looks fine, works fantastic and is quiet).

I also used EnzoTech BCC9 low profile copper heat sinks instead of the less efficient aluminum ones. None have fallen off, (used for 6 months now). The Enzotech sinks already have the Akasa grade tape on them.

Finally, as mentioned, the VRM on the 4870 is worse than a blast furnace. If not cooled it will eventually destroy the card. I am planning to install a vga cooler on my 4870 but want to make sure that there is a proper VRM sink available.

Someone mentioned that the VRM wasn't that big a deal because they had done an Nvidia card with no problems. The VRM on an ATI card and an Nvidia card are radically different. That is why the A/C Accelero comes with a VRM sink for ATI but not Nvidia. VRM is a big deal and needs to be kept cool. I am looking for a VRM cooler for the 4870.

I bought my Akasa products and the Enzotech heatsinks from Sidewinder Computers, (online). Excellent products.

So does the Accelero Twin Turbo come with mosfet/ram heatsinks? If so, what about adhesive? How well do they work (assuming they are included)? Anyone try this out, I'd really like to get one of these, but if they don't bundle the RAM/VRM heatsinks with it, I'm just going to wait for the Palit non-reference design to go on sale...
