AMD Launches Radeon HD 4850
Posted by Regeneration on June 19th, 2008, 03:09 PM

As most of you already know, the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series were originally scheduled for the 18th of June, but AMD decided to postpone it by a week to the 25th of June - due to Nvidia’s GTX 200 launch. Earlier today, AMD sent a memo to the press saying that they made a decision to launch the HD 4850 today, because too many shops are selling it and non-selected people are posting reviews, so they lost control on the situation, so they decided to launch it today.

Since AMD hasn’t published any press release yet, you will have to dig up the information somewhere else yet again, since we weren’t briefed. A few weeks ago, I emailed AMD myself and requested information, presentation and maybe some sample, so we could provide you with another fine, reliable, non-biased and non-BS review as you all like, but AMD with all their wisdom decided to ignore my email.

Then I emailed their partners, sadly with the same results. It seems it’s not about popularity, rank or rating, it’s just politics and probably some corruption involved as well. But I never gave up, I spent the last days on the phone attempting to obtain some materials from local sources and I was supposed to borrow a Radeon HD 4850 card earlier today, but AMD’s latest memo has pretty ruined up my plans. Yes, they rescheduled, just to screw websites - like us.

I’m sorry, I’ve done my best.

Darn! Part of me thinks that wouldn't have a problem getting a sample if you promised them "favorable results". That's what ol' tomz hw has been doing for ages.

That reminds me, as much as AMD complains about Intel and their monopolistic tactics; they are using the same tactics on us. Websites like Tom’s Hardware are now monopolies with 0 day reviews, because of these nasty agreements with AMD.

Because of AMD and their nasty deals, we and many others are unable to compete these sites; obtaining cards before the official release is almost impossible! When we get these cards from shops it’s “too late” to review since everyone already read it.

In the past five years, you saw the same sites with 0 day reviews and that’s unfair to the others. Or they provide samples to everyone or nobody. Or at least, they should provide some “renting” option to obtain these samples.

thats what i guess ATi lost in its people skills when joined AMD since they used to be all about community..

but then again i am glad to c the underdog did it again with what seems to be amazing reults even if they are not as good as the reviews sell them to be...

sounds like ATi starts ignoring when nVIDIA starts to show interest weird....

oh and P.S am not that excited of the 4800 series tendency to overheat although its understandable some reviews had trouble to run in crossfire mode withouth having hangs or any sort of heat related problem since the 4850 comes with single slot cooling solution and since the card's temp hangs around the 80-85c it will leave a mark on your system temps specially in crossfire setup..

and on final notes i am damn happy i didnt go for a SLi capable board
