ATI Catalyst 8.6
Posted by Regeneration on June 18th, 2008, 08:48 PM

ATI/AMD have released a new build of their Catalyst software suite. This particular software suite updates both the AMD Display Driver, and the Catalyst Control Center. This unified driver has been further enhanced to provide the highest level of power, performance, and reliability. The AMD Catalyst software suite is the ultimate in performance and stability.

OpenGL Adaptive Anti-Aliasing Custom Filters Support
This release of Catalyst introduces Adaptive Anti-Aliasing Custom Filters support for OpenGL applications for the ATI Radeon HD 3000 Series, ATI Radeon HD 2000 Series of products. Using the Edge Detect Custom Filter, users can enable 12X and 24X Anti-Aliasing. Selecting 4X Anti-Aliasing plus selecting the Edge Detect filter delivers the equivalent of 12X Anti-Aliasing. Selecting 8X Anti-Aliasing plus selecting the Edge Detect filter delivers the equivalent of 24X Anti-Aliasing.

OpenGL CrossFireX Support
This release of Catalyst introduces CrossFireX QUAD support for OpenGL applications. Users with any combination of a ATI Radeon HD 3870, ATI Radeon HD 3850, and ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics accelerators running with 3 or 4 GPUs will be able to run in CrossFireX QUAD mode (when used in a CrossFireX compatible PC).

Users are also able to run in CrossFireX QUAD mode while running in extended desktop mode on the Windows Vista desktop.

Catalyst Install Enhancement
This release of Catalyst introduces an enhancement to the Catalyst installer. Users are no longer required to reboot their system after Catalyst has finished installing (as long as the installation is an upgrade from a previous Catalyst install).

• 3DMark Vantage:10 to 15% gains across all Radeon HD 3xxx and HD 2xxx products, with larger gains in specific cases.
• Call of Duty 4: Performance increases across all Radeon HD 3xxx and HD 2xxx products, with gains as large as 35% in specific maps.

And you need to seriously think to stick to what you can mentally handle.

A nintendo definetly seems to be the appropriate choice .

Godspeed my friend, on the long way to heaven

Excuse me for being of age to drink and being drunk while doing driver updates, just for your information I have tried the drivers at least 5 more times. I still get the VPU recovery.
Prince of Persia 3 crashes 1964 perfect dark, Golden Eye they all crash, SOF2 SOf3, Far Cry, Crysis, Doom3, Prey Need for Speed Carbon, they all crash they wont even load into their menus with 8.6 drivers.
I hope ATI is getting the VPU recovery report and I am sure I'm not the only one who is getting a crash system lock up from these. They rushed these drivers for 4000 series, plain and simple.
I run Eset Smart Security for the obvious, CCleaner for registry, and Spybot S&S for IE and Firefox 3.0. I have no security leaks I have made an Nlite Windows XP Home sp3 with all updates to this month fresh install system ran smooth as ice until I touched the 8.6 Catalyst.
So you can just kiss my ass for talking shit when it is you who I feel doesn't know what your talking about, me not being able to handle it mentally. I build and program computers hourly and no I don't remove anything in Nlite I just add updates, you know security fixes, so nice try.
You have succeed in being a total dick for no f*cking reason. It is a fact that Nintendo has less then 1% failure rate on every system they have ever made or released to the public. No heating, crashing issues like most PC hardware does and any other Gaming console. So god speed on your judgment day.

Unregistered: The problem is you're unloading on the wrong people! Why should we, who are simply end-users like yourself, have to be subjected to the ugliness of your rant and raving when the problem is with your system and something wrong between it and the drivers?

You're not even asking for help here and this IS NOT ATI/AMD Official Unload Your Anger on US Site.

Maybe if you'd post some system specs, ask if there's anything we think could help, things would get fixed. Is that TOO MUCH for us to ask for?

FWIW: These drivers have...so far...been very stable under Vista 32-bit. I've played hours upon hours of CRYSIS, and the GRID Demo. Not one hiccup so far. Very nice drivers.

More EDIT/UPDATE:

FWIW, since I can boot up into XP Pro SP3, I did so and then made sure all my Motherboard Device Drivers, Chipset Drivers, and Windows Updates were up-to-date. Then, I installed the latest 8.6 drivers for XP on my system. So far, after several hours, I have still not had the first BSOD, Lock-up, or any other problem with these drivers.

If there is ONE thing, I have noticed that, under XP, my Refresh Rates on my CRTs has become a bit lower than what my monitors can do by default. Example: 1600x1200 my NEC CRT should default to a max of 75Hz. The drivers under XP want to set the max to 70Hz. This is something 'new' with the XP drivers as it hasn't been limiting like this before. But, it's not a problem as I can still use the higher refresh rates by de-selecting the Hide Modes ... option and then select the known max.

Otherwise, again, 'so far', these drivers are quite nice. Just played through a couple of races in the GRID demo at 1600x1200 with all settings on HIGH.

Well unregistered, although undeserving ill drop you some suggestions.

Firstly do a clean install of the drivers, remove the old ones, run cccleaner and re-install, make sure you dont have any 3rd part oc software runing, such as ati tray tools. I would also make sure your directx is current.

The problem you are having is most commonly assosiated with a fautly or not powerful enough powersupply or trying to push the clocks pas what the card can handle, but since your not having this issue with older drivers it may be that something is going wonky with your frequencies, so again if you have 3rd party software for tweaking your card i would disable it for now.

Lastly the refreshrate issue Dyre mentioned may have soemthing to do with it, many lcd monitors will only accept one refreshj rate, so if you are running an lcd monitor and the drivers are trying to force a unsuported refreshrate that could be causing problems, so go and check what your refreshrate is set to and make sure its supported by your drivers.

Hope it ends up working for you man, next time just ask us if you need some advice instead of chewing our heads off for drivers we didnt make, theres no shame in asking.

i'm fairly certain i know the answer to this problem but i'll be damned if i'm going to help this little fucker now...
