XP SP3 Cripples AMD PCs with Endless Reboots
Posted by Regeneration on May 10th, 2008, 04:19 AM

Installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 sends some PCs into an endless series of reboots, according to posts to a Microsoft support forum. Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft Corp. and a prominent Windows blogger, has worked with users to tentatively identify the problem as involving only machines using processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Messages from frustrated users began accumulating on the XP SP3 support newsgroup Wednesday, just a day after Microsoft released the update to the general public. "I just installed Windows XP SP3 and after completing the processes and when the system reboots, the system cannot proceed to load the Windows," said a user identified as "Olin" in a message that kicked off a long thread. "It just displays the flash screen of Windows then after it reboots again."

Most users who left messages on the forum said that they were unable to boot into Windows Safe mode — a last-ditch way to sidestep the normal boot process for troubleshooting purposes — or revert to a previously saved System Restore point. Some were understandably upset. "Way to go, Microsoft, releasing the pile of dung called SP3 that hoses your system so bad even Safe Mode isn't working!" said a user identified as Mike Voss. "Props to your QA guys, they certainly have done their job."

Update:
There is a workaround available on Jesper Johansson's blog.

I didn't click on the link to read the entire report. But, I've installed SP3 on my second PC that uses an AMD 64 X2 4800+ and haven't had any problems like this at all. It's been running with SP3 now for nearly two weeks.

I, too, though, would really raise a stink if a SP caused such a problem. In fact, I did so a few years ago when SP1 caused a serious problem with my XP Home installation. Microsoft ended up sending me a free OEM XP Pro disk to use.

(I wonder if they're as generous with the disks under this scenario?)

No problems whatsoever with my dad's (AMD athlon64 3500+ s939) and my (AMD athlon X2 6000+) computer after installing SP3. This must only be happening on certain PCs.

had this problem on my other computer, when i finally caught the bsod it was an inaccessible boot volume issue.

Fresh install is fine.
