Mass Effect PC - Is Piracy The Better Choice?
Posted by Regeneration on May 8th, 2008, 09:45 AM

Mass Effect PC will require an online connected activation courtesy of SecureRom servers every ten days. Apparently, for forever. Now, while it's clear Bioware and EA will go out of it's way to insure they avoid the activation debacle that hounded releases like Bioshock, it is also clear that when you purchase games these days you're not actually buying a consumable product that you "own" in the sense that you own a towel or a pair of shoes.

As a result, there is a philosophical firestorm brewing on Bioware's forums . At least there was, until the forum thread was locked. All in all, we really don't blame Bioware's forum moderators for locking the thread. The issues at hand are quite easy to decipher without having to read 13 pages of angry rant.

EA/Bioware's philosophy is an understandable if flawed one in our view. They have a product that cost significant time, effort, and capital to develop. They have an ethical obligation to their company and it's shareholders to protect that asset. What seems to have fallen through the cracks here, is customer-centric thinking along with a realistic appraisal of what does and does not work.

You can read the entire article at FastSilicion.

DRM is a piece of shit. I bought C&C 3 Tiberium Wars from EA Link when it came out. I can’t play it for months now, just because I had some OS issues, and had reinstall several times. I tried to contact EA’s support department, and they never fixed it for months now. Too bad they don’t have an office in my country; I’d sue them in a small claims court for that.

So what , it will be cracked anyway .
Maybe it will take them +1 day more that normal to do it.

This is so stupid, what is the point of this?? When they crack it, this 10 day activation nuscance will be removed with prejudice, the only people this will effect are the consumers whom it will annoy the living daylights out of.

When will they realize that nothing will ever stop people from cracking a protection measure, there is nothing that cannot be cracked, so give it a rest, save yourself some money, save your consumers some agrivation and drop the half baked "protection"

This issue is now dead. BioWare and EA have reported that the 10-day re-authentication as originally planned has been rescinded and the game will now only require a one-time Internet-connected Authentication. Not only that, but, after it's authenticated, the player will also not be required to have the DVD in the drive in order to play the game.

Additionally, the game can be installed on three (3) separate PCs simultaneously as long as the installation is properly authenticated online. There is no limit as to the number of re-installations that may be needed on prevously authenticated PCs.

Now remove the online authentication completely. Oh well, can't win all the time.
