AMD makes massive layoffs
Posted by Regeneration on March 19th, 2008, 11:54 PM

AMD is quietly cutting five per cent of its workforce. Pink slips have been handed out now. The cuts are going to be across the board, not targeted at any specific group. Whispers also say that this is because the chip maker is going to badly miss numbers this quarter, and it is taking preemptive moves to get costs under control. Too little, too late, too badly aimed, or not aimed it seems. With the earnings in free fall, expect a press conference in a day or two to explain the problem, and how they are dealing with it via the axe.

Really bad for amd... they have the best stuff... but not making enough ads !

i think they took too long to fix the phenom bug, instead of pulling al lshipments and releasing a fixed version right away they waited how long to release it, no one wants to buy a buggy cpu

well intel is taking ages to release the Q9450... so it might not be the release...
i guess buying ati wasnt the best idea... amd is worth less than they paid for ati...
afaik amd ships 4x2.4 cpu's max, intel is at 4x3.0
would be sad to see amd goin' as intel can create any price they want then... which isn't everybody's dream right?
this isn't a thing about amd vs intel, this is more a monopolistic problem for all computer buyers (desktops)

I'll ignore your misinformed (not slightly misinformed, seriously misinformed) post blindartist because it's the dawn of the new year.

bad managment quickly results in catastrophe, in such a competitive market you can't afford to blink let alone allow a slip up on the phenom scale..this is the knock on effect of several slip ups (mainly involving poor product development processes and not to mention the biggest error in allowing the competitors to strengthen their grip on an already dominant market position) - it has been coming for a long time now.

- the bad new? its going to get worse.

Unix the point isnt if the cpu was or was not ifact buggy, the point is that everywhere said it was buggy so nomatter how much you say its not in the back of peoples minds it still is and no one wants that, they needed to rectify the issue imidiatly, even with a placibo

Intel is taking forever to release their cpu because they know they have no real competition from amd at this point, sadly, amd needs to step up their game and im afraid cutting staff isnt the right direction
