Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 Review @ TPU
Posted by Regeneration on December 7th, 2007, 10:33 PM

Sapphire's new HD 3870 card is based on AMD's RV670 GPU which is made in a 55 nm process with 666 million transitors and support for DirectX 10.1 and PCI-Express 2.0. This card that is sold for around $249 is intended to be AMD's new offering for an upper midrange card - but can it beat the GeForce 8800 GT?

to this day i see improvements with each new driver on my old 1800xl, i have no doubt they have yet to tap the full performance of the 3870. but where this card really shines is power consumption and to me that is a pretty fair trade...

can I get CrossFireX with 2 different 3870; let's say one from GigaByte and one of these Sapphire ???!?!?!?

I can't see why not the CrossFireX compatibility should be determined by the GPU itself and not the card manufacturer ... can't find any info on that question though good one

maybe if the cards have different BIOS (custom)

Looking at the AMD / ATI site it mentions "multi-gpu" and "plug and play" under the description which would make me think the CrossFireX interface is standard ...

I'll try to get another GigaByte ... just in case
another thing ... there are 2 bridge ports on each card, they need to be both connected between eachother ?!?

Another quick search and it seems one of the things CrossFireX did is eliminate the need for both connectors according to the Inquirer ... info is pretty vague on the AMD / ATI site on it and maybe they should address that !!

Second, the connectors, as you can see, need only one to go between cards, unlike what they have now where two are needed. This in effect gives them a lot more headroom, allowing even more-way CrossFire if need, or more likely if there is ever a board that has the PCIe2 lanes. That is nit-picky though. Third, the notes on the slides shown to the Inq say that only Dual is supported at launch with Triple and Quad in Q1, January is strongly suggested.

guess that 3 and 4 way crossfire need one connector because all pcie lanes are 16x
but I have one 16x and the other is 4x so ... I guess using them both compensates for the reduced bandwidth on the second pcie

we shall see when the card arrives and I can begin testing

Another useless piece of GetForced-competing quickly-made useless hardware.

Sounds about right I noticed the extra connector in that pic with 4 cards. Cool on the card and let us know how you make out Bro
