ATI Catalyst 7.11 Performance Analysis
Posted by Regeneration on November 25th, 2007, 08:14 PM

It seems like AMD forgot to send us the drivers before release this time, and there could be a reason for that. As we have a look over the release notes, there appears to be no performance improvements noted anywhere this time round. This isn’t good news for 3870 owners as while the card is pretty good a lot of us expected some gains from it with its first official driver release.

Catalyst 7.11 doesn't even include the crysis hotfix. I don't know why they expected performance increases. This catalyst has been released quickly for the fixes. It's not rocket science. The performance optimizations along with any hotfixes are likely to be in the next release. Even then there is no excuse for taking performance hits to fix some bugs.

So I was right. Stick to the crysis hotfix driver until the December driver is released.

2 x 3850 256MB cards in crossfire own it. The problem is not all games support CF.

not everybody has 2 x pci-e to run cf and also it's much cheaper to get a 2900pro and oc it above XT, as for 2x3850 in cf the kill 8800gt also but i don't think that's fare comparison.. 1 on 1 is fare and 1 on 1 you could compare 3850 vs 8600 and.. well the 3850 owns

Isolating the driver itself with CCC and CP removed (Thanks Sting1) having issues. Not sure exactly what it is so keeping my comments on it quiet for now.

CCC is getting better but not for me YET

i went ahead and installed the official 7.11s to see how things went with them. Still playing Crysis, The Witcher, and Call of Duty: MW.

So far, no real issues to report under Vista 32-bit.

ATT can do that, it's under general options.

Basty looks like Arklon answered your question and not really fond of ATT. Dyre uses it faithfully and has had issues with the last 2 official releases so leaving that one for a bit.

On my issue went back cleaned everything and ran JV16 powertools to clean the registry. Installed the full version again including everything but the product registration and it seems fine.

Here is the symptom and if anyone else gets it either with this release or the Cat 7.11 with CP let me know. Nothing was overclocked this weekend I was making changes and trying out new software.

Randomly the screen will freeze and sometimes the monitor will go into standby like the monitor is auto adjusting or something. Also you can here the fan change speed like the card is being reset and the only time I have had that happen is when VPU recover is activated. Since I have that option disabled not really sure .. when this occurred I had no O/C I was just chatting on MSN and no other software running.

EDIT: Also noted if I kept typing when the screen came back the text was there .. its only a split second

So after talking to Chaos last night I enabled VPU recover and if it triggers I will submit the generated report to Terry and the Catalyst team.

(Someone asked as well about Crysis I had no issues with it under XP SP2. Just this issue and not really sure if its specifically related to this driver or a combination of things)
