AMD: Upcoming GPU will be faster than 8800 GTX-Ultra by 15%
Posted by Regeneration on November 16th, 2007, 07:37 PM

In the Radeon HD 3800 presentation AMD gave us, there was a very interesting slide in the end called 'And there's more...'. According to that specific slide, AMD hints that their upcoming high-end GPU will be faster than Nvidia’s GeForce 8800 GTX-Ultra by 15%. The same slide also suggests a price tag of $399-499 USD and availability somewhere around January (New Year). According to the rumors around, AMD is going to name that product, as the Radeon HD 3870 X 2; but only time will tell. Anyway, since the NDA of the Radeon HD 3800 series has been expired, I have attached a screenshot from the presentation above.

AMD can say what they like, until i see hard numbers, its all fud.

This doesn't matter because in December nvidia will unleash a card that can actually play DX10/10.1 titles without sucking!

I don't know if any of you saw this > Abu Dhabi buys stake in AMD | CNET News.com . Now maybe AMD will have some money to put into development.

Oh wait! Did you say HD3870 X2? Is that one of those CrossFire on a card jobs? Cause if it is I'm not interested! Oh well...

SNAFU AMD .... I don't get it
the situation is clear/almost ... the 3870 ain't beating the GTX; can it be ... a new card?
Quote
i have no doubt that this card will put the 8800 to shame, and i have no doubt that nvidia's new card will be nothing more then a even higher clocked clone of the 8800

Few more pictures of new 3870 X2:

Fudzilla - R680, Radeon 3870 X2, detailed pics
Fudzilla - R680 is Radeon 3870 X2, cards pictured

I really hope AMD can pull it off and we can have again second player which could also produce high end GPU.

damn...that thing is huge, now way that would fit in my case, my x1950 only has about an inch or two to spear before it runs into the hard drive bay

that x2 is huge... it wouldn;t fit into my case... the 2900 is under my hdd 1 cm or so... to this one... damn!

This is a quad crossfire with TWO HD3870 X2

Exactly what I was thinking. 15% better performance over GTX/Ultra over a year after GTX release is nothing to be proud of!!? If it was 150% I would think it sounded great, specially if it showed to be true. But with AMD you never know these days, remember the dissapointment we got from 2900XT??? It was supposed to be a nvidia killer monster card, and we all know how that ended up! I feel for Amd/ATI, but until they come up with some really super hardware im not buying it.

Ok I can do that!

But specifically the 3870 X2 is not what I want. I'll wait for the 3890, or whatever it's called.

This 3870 X2 reminds me of the 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500. Back then I wanted one sooooo BAD! I was crushed the day I heard that 3Dfx was going out of business. Just thinking about it makes my stomach queasy.

Yes, I do have "issues" and should seek professional help...

Oh, OH! I know... I'll get a lobotomy, then I can be like Turban. j/k!

I like hints

what are they hinting at thou?

more heat? more power usage?

damn u ATI why did u have to turn so mediocre lately <.<

Still no 8800GTs in stock when they were supposed to be shipping so every single 3870 has been grabbed. Now all that's left are some 3850s. I've never seen the gpu market so hungry before!

I think I will await this mystery GPU myself I think the HD 3870 will be an improvement over the 3850 Rege reviewed but don't think its gonna knock anyone off there feet. You all know how much I LOVE NV (the sarcasm come through lol) ... but the 8800 is a strong platform and I don't think this HD 38xx series has the balls to touch it ...

the 3850 already touches it, if it had slightly higher clock's it would match or better it, i hav e a feeling the 3870 is gonna better it with ease and this mister 3890 will completly put it to shame im sure

Well, I think the RV670 is more powerful then we think, so maybe we should give them a chance.

I think I'll buy the 3870, when it will be available in my contry

I will switch to ATI when the Linux drivers mature.

I might buy two 3870's. I'm tired of waiting and don't want to continue doing so until the next generation. I hope Newegg doesn't decide to gouge the prices once they get some more in stock, though. :/

The floor is open and we shall see

Although not directly related to the new ATI card this link can be rather informative on ATI's current situation. It's all about cheating. Link

the biggest flaw is that the ati chips have 64 shaders pipes which output 5 operations per cycle(superscalar). 64*5=320 running at the same clock speed as the Core

where as Nvidia have 128 Douple pumped (out putting 256 textures per cycle) running at 1000-1500Mhz

this is why AMD HAS NO CHANCE

I found one piece around 270$+VAT on one of my suppliers; but it will not be available untill the 21 this month
I really need a confirmation that my XTX is beaten by this 3870 ... otherwise I'll not buy it
