New Qimonda GDDR5 Memory Promises 3x Performance of GDDR3
Posted by Regeneration on November 2nd, 2007, 09:57 PM

It is graphics memory that analysts attribute to the stellar rise of Qimonda, the Infineon division yet to be spun off, into the global #3 supplier position on iSuppli's list, behind Samsung and Hynix Semiconductor. Having been on the crest of the GDDR3 wave put Qimonda there, and now the company and its parent are taking a gamble on hopping directly over one generation of memory and riding the GDDR5 wave at its outset. As memory gets faster, like any technology that deals with signaling, it has to have a strategy for reducing noise.

this is so mind blowing i mean i never heard of this before but now.. it all makes sense here is a link to the new "CGPU" specs kind of way Meet Larrabee, Intel's answer to a GPU - The INQUIRER

interesting....

p.s lol reg new gpu??? hmm if u got one of those i dont think ill feel bad if i get one too then been plundering bout that last couple of days now..

There isn't any GPU that can utilize the enormous bandwidth these memory chips have to offer, i know my HD2900 has it in ounces and it cant use half of it, and thats GDDR3. The graphics industry has to pull something amazing out of their hats if moving to GDDR5 is going to have any impact on performance.

Well what i say in this is simple... they will keep the chips .. and when it's will be the time to use it they will use it ... it's simple like that

Well it doesn't work that way.

Before memory bandwidth used to be the bottleneck on a gfx card, now it`s the other way. ATI paired GDDR4 memorychips with their X19xx GPU making it a selling point, while tests showed that there where no benefit from it. The same goes for the HD2900 GPU it comes both with GDDR3 and GDDR4 and guess what, no gain what so ever. But they make sure to put a big DDR4 sticker on the package charge you big $$$ for it. thats my point.

u have a point zandro
to use ddr5 they need to double up GPU performance (core it self) so they would gain any benefit from gddr5
anyway gddr5 can only benefits single SLI(two gpu processors) card with shared gddr and nothing more

And excellent post

Yeah that's right...

Anyway to tell the ATI guys not to put DDR5 on the HD3800 if it can't manage it efficiently?

Because I want this card to be perfect
