Hi!

I did a remake of the Cvar files. Instead of just copying the high settings to [3] I also renamed old [3] to [2], old [2] to [1] and removed old [1]

This way what used to be:

High is Very High
(This is all the candy!)

Medium is High
(What used to be our highest setting is now activated when we choose medium)

Low is Medium
(It doesnt go any lower since there are only 3 steps in XP i had to get rid of low settings alltogether)

Before with the old cVars "hack" if I chose to lower some settings, I actually had to go two steps to medium (from very high) now since meduim corresponds to high it's only one step in that sense. There will of course be no Low settings, since they are now like the old medium, but I think anyone who uses thisk hack does not need to have anything set at low

Before we had 4 2 1 now we have 4 3 2 Which makes more sense.

Just like the original hack, I didn't touch the MotionBlur file which is set to 1 (Very High Would be 3)

I haven't tried the files myself but I think this will work.

It seems to work fine, these are screenshots taken at 1280*800 scaled to 50% and auto contrast corrected with Microsoft office image editor to sharpen them a bit.

This is Low (as standard Medium):

I Hope the pics work, I'm not sure how to use attachments like this...

This means that if you install these cvar files, just go back to the menu and select "Medium" settings and everything will be just as it was previously on "High", consequently setting something to "Low" will correspond to the old "Medium" setting.

I think you get the point

Thanx I tried it out yesterday, and it's really good to be able to set some features back to what used to be high, (now medium after this hack), to gain some fps.

I wrote a post about my new rig that I'm running this on, it's in my blog here. Great build for the money, extreme bang for the buck. Just as a friendly helper if someone thinks about upgrading to be able to play Crysis... For better FPS I actually have to run it at Medium (former High) Very high just doesn't cut it in critical situations.

Yep I think it is, look at the 3850 test at Tomshardware. But It's also more expensive.
The HD 3850 Is at 2nd place according to Yougamers.com

First rule is dont trust ANYTHING you read at tom's hardware, he's got all sorts of spnsorship deals with nvidia and everything you read there is sure be biased bull***t

the 3850 is a bit slower then the 8800, the 3870 can hold it own, maybe a bit slower in certain cases but still a good card, both cards are good though

My Radeon 3850 (ASUS with big cooler, whisper quiet) runs stable and cool at 720/950

I always felt the HD38xx series would shine a bit more with better cooling. What exactly are you using for a cooler just curious as this is my new hobby

i think my next aim is 8800gt...and not 3850/3870...

If you dont want such a big hit in fps you can edit the autoexec.cfg file so that only some very high things are enabled. I enable the color filter, watershafts and sunshafts, and the POM. (A few more too I just cant remember). It keeps my fps high (30-50) and its basically very high settings, and I only have a $200 graphics card.
