AMD Launches Barcelona
Posted by Regeneration on September 10th, 2007, 10:22 AM

AMD today introduced the Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) processor, the world's most advanced x86 processor ever designed and manufactured and the first native x86 quad-core microprocessor. Designed from inception for the most demanding datacenters, Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor-based servers from global OEMs and system builders can deliver breakthrough capabilities to customers in a time of dramatically escalating performance-per-watt emphasis.

Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors with AMD's revolutionary Direct Connect Architecture introduce innovations that go beyond four x86 processing cores on a single die of silicon. Critical considerations for today's most challenging business requirements inspired Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor innovations:

Energy efficiency with a 50 percent increase in integer and floating-point performance, enhanced virtualization performance, and investment protection via a customer-centric approach enabling non-disruptive transitions from dual- to quad-core within the same power and thermal envelopes to help keep infrastructure costs down.

Reviews: AnandTech, HotHardware, TechwareLabs and The Tech Report.

Will be interesting to see how it performs ..... looks good though

Finally! Beats Intel in most tests but doesn't completely own it. If AMD was a larger company they would have had this product out much earlier.

Phenom reaches much higher clockspeeds. I envy all the socket 939 people who are getting a nice brand new AM2+ motherboard.

and after that wait for AM3+ or AM4 or whatever they call the next socket

i have skt AM2 can i put on it a skt AM2+ cpu ? and what is the difference between AM2 and AM2+ ?

Yes AM2+ cpus work in AM2 sockets + visa versa and in the future AM3 cpus will work in AM2+ sockets cause the cpus memory controller can switch from DDR3 to DDR2 mode but not visa versa because the DDR2 cpus obviously lack DDR3 at the moment. (DDR3 is such a waste of money right now)
AM2+ = HT 3.0, separate voltages for the memory controller and core plus a bunch of other features.

I have Socket 939 and seeing as AMD killed it off so soon they can shove Barcelona up there advanced micro designed arses.

go and complain elsewhere, no one wants it really.

939 was killed off for marking purposes and amd is a business, come back and complain when you run a business.
