Crossfire HD 2900XT vs. 8800 Ultra @ TweakTown
Posted by Regeneration on July 9th, 2007, 05:22 PM

The top dog for anyone wanting to go the Nvidia route is the 8800 Ultra, it’s a fast card but it doesn’t exactly scream performance-to-cost ratio. With pricing that starts around $600US to $700US, they’re certainly not cheap. The HD 2900 XT is the card sitting up top of the ATI pyramid. Pricing is closer to the $400US mark for just about all brands. A pair in crossfire is going to set you back around $800US.

I like the HD2900xt but its much too noisy. Does anyone know of a VGA cooler for these?

not really fairly based as they are pitting multi against single cards...

squall_leonhart is right, compare crossfire to sli but not two cards vs one... and iff you notice, its not THAT much faster only 25%
but power consumption is high... nothing to add here.

When are we going to see a title that can use the 2900xt's physics processing?

when ati codes the driver for it.

...that's reaching a bit isn't it?...
2x 2900 xt = $800, 1x 8800 ultra = $700. the math isn't that hard to do, is it?

Right But why didn't they have a GTX SLI to give a more realistic comparison - the article seems a bit lazy and has an over reliance on synthetic benchmarks for me.

well you can take everything as basis for comparison,
PRICE, FLAGHSIP (best chipset from manufacturer), or power consumption... which would ruin ati atm

This article is about price, not fairness. With $700-$800 you can buy Ultra or 2900XT CF. But I wonder how 2900XT CF works against 8800 GTS SLI.

you also have to take into account the Graphical quality of the 8800 over the 2900XT as well...

GTS sli is slower than a XT crossfire in 3Dmark06

if you ask me AMD have fuckd up something with drivers
i dont get it how a 1950XTX CF can get higher score than a HD2900XT CF
i think that drivers are totally fuckd up
they need to fix that as soon as possible

Quite right. This would be a genuine matchup. But as I've said there seems to be and underlying subtext to this particular review
