ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX Benchmarked @ DailyTech
Posted by Regeneration on April 26th, 2007, 11:34 AM

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX video cards feature 1GB of GDDR4 video memory, besting the GeForce 8800 GTX’s 768MB of GDDR3 video memory. GPU manufacturers often wait to set the exact clock frequencies of bins until just weeks before launch. Our Radeon HD 2900 XTX sample was released to board partners in the second week of April, features memory clocked at 2.02 GHz and a core clock of 750 MHz.

Physically, the Radeon HD 2900 XTX core is identical to the Radeon HD 2900 XT core. Both feature 320 stream processors, but the XTX differs by bringing GDDR4 to the package. Despite the reference clock speed differences, DailyTech managed to push the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT up to 845 MHz core and 1.99 GHz memory. Unlike the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT benchmarked yesterday, the HD 2900 XTX is a 12-inch card geared specifically towards OEMs and system integrators.

I really hope this is not the 'final' performance.

Looks like they have some work to do

Im really surprised.... well... is because of the drivers... not fully support the videocard.. ! We will wait for better results Or maybe is the motherboard dont fully support the videocard we dont know !

I suspect chipset issues/drivers. No damn way it could run like that when the DDR3 version beat the 8800 in almost all tests, unless... the latency of that DDR4 is unusually high.

The drivers are not mature yet + the HD 2900XTX is not even finalised yet + Looking at the specs it should be a bunch lot faster than the XT and not just a bit so it's obviously a glitch holding it down. They had better not screw up the Linux support for this series like they did with the last.

hmmmm
why dident they use mbo with other chipset like Intel or AMD(ATI)
we all know that nvidia is making a chipsets for high support only for their grafikcards
Quote
really strange with that specs it must easilly beat 8800 gtx besides there isn't any differences between gddr4 and gddr3 which shows that smthng is wrong

I'll take those Benchmarks with a grain of salt until better Driver support becomes available.

the performance seems to be same as 2900XT ... wtf ..

I suspect these issues are not driver..systemboard..DDR4...releated, but infact a product ATI knew had issues which it was trying to resolve, thats why we've had to wait this long!

"The less than stellar performance benchmarks are no surprise to board partners and AMD insiders. Two independent ATI board builders told DailyTech that Radeon HD 2900 XTX will not be a part of their initial portfolios. Given the additional memory cost and bulky card footprint, it seems unlikely the XTX will ever see the light of day."

Even before release the XTX is being given its burial rites and the performance crown given to NV without a fight. On the bright side at least the XT put up a fight and in this more competitive market segment I feel NV had a fight on their hands, esp. if it's prices are competitive.

For what its worth I think we won't see 8800 Ultra so soon, reckon this will be held back for the serious competition.

Sure hope this works in linux.. maybe with the help from the San Diego kid.. we can get Direct X 10 in linux too.

I have read on other sites.. real problem with sound driver.. Any truth that this card has sound and that the sound driver is slowing everything to a crawl?

Also.. some of the Microsoft mandated crap is probably giving Ati and now AMD hell just like it caused problems for nVidia.

But the performance numbers of the 8800GTX in Oblivion at 1920x1200 make me a bit suspicious.
Also, the XT's core clock being 745 and the XTX's being 750?
The GTX is also factory OC'ed from 575 core to 650.

A member on the THG forums who went to the R600 demo event said that these benchmarks are quite a bit off and that that OEM card wasn't what Sven should have received. Since he's under NDA, he couldn't go into more detail.

the problem is within the memory controller

Look at the Oblivion benchmarks for the HD2900XT on both those pages. They're inconsistent. And I hear this isn't the first time they've done this, either. Why the hell would you compare it against a factory OC'ed 8800GTX, too?

Because the OC'ed GTX is clocked to the supposed speeds of the Ultra, don't worry though it doesn't appear the XTX will appear until Q3...if ever?

One thing I can't understand is why people are so surprised by failure of R600, after all there must have been a reason its been so long in coming. ATI in Nov. 06 must have seen the 8800 (prob. earlier) and though they could release - thus a delay in a vain attempt to bodge some more performance.

Don't get me wrong I want ATI/AMD to succeed - NV dominating the market would be a nightmare, as would Intel. But I'm happy to an extent with this failure due to ATI's intregration of sound with R600 to aid the DRM cause-which I hope burns them and proves to be a warning to themselves and others who have such ideas of control.

weird since the other card benchmark was so much better than the gts nv card

this gives me a bad feeling

Well, slightly better - given the GTS is 6 months older - a lifetime in GPU history - this is a big disappointment for the waiting ATI bois.
