DirectX 10 on Windows XP?
Posted by Regeneration on April 21st, 2007, 08:58 PM

The current preview allows you to run a number of examples from the DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. We hope to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games.

The main problem with DX10 and Windows XP isn’t runtime libraries. It’s the DX10 Display Driver. It is almost impossible because of the new LDDM design, only ATI and Nvidia can possibly turn this into reality. This project seems to be some kind of ‘DX10 wrapper’, so don’t expect to run DX10 games with it, due to horrible performance and compatibility issues. Another issue is the fact that Microsoft uses DirectX 10 to promote Vista, so expect from Microsoft to use their lawyers against this project.

What is a "LDDM design"?

Off the top of my head "Longhorn Device Driver Model"?

Anyway, A lot of the G80 Hardware is directly exposed irregardless of API. (i.e. DX8,DX9,DX10) Logically I can only assume that ATi is taking the same approach. With that being said Developers can utilize a lot of "DX10" benefits in both DX9 and OpenGL.
