Soooo....do you have the jumper settings correct on those two Optical drives? Just as with HDDs, one has to be Master with the other set to Slave. As long as these jumpers are set correctly, things should work well.

The easiest way to check would be the 'thickness' of the cable. Though, I've been working on computers for well over 10 years now. An 80 pin cable looks almost flat because the pins are so close together, where a 40 pin cable has more obvious ridging between the cables. Plus a 40 pin cable has a standard black/grey end on all 2/3 connectors, where a 80 pin cable has blue, red, or yellow ends.
I would then continue to look at the drivers and windows itself. There are other things in the device manager you could check to ensure that UDMA33 or UDMA66 was enabled on your primary and secondary ports.
One quick check would be here:
+ Control Panel
+ System
+ Hardware (if applicable)
+ Device Manager
+ IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
+ <name> Controller
+ Primary / Secondary Channel
Ensure that DMA is selected and enabled if available. Also make sure you don't have any bangs or questions. Curious, what is the controller that you have listed there? We can check for even newer drivers for it...
P.S. Kirill, you're not helping ! *LOL* | im getting this on primary ide channel

Yes, I did look at the IDE connector on the board and its 40 pin (the cable two). Now why are you talking about 80 pin cables Jbruneau?

If the link works right, the above image shows an 80-pin IDE cable. It doesn't have anymore holes in the connector than does a 40-pin connector. But, it does have double the number of wires.

Blue end goes to MB (important that bit) and Black Primary drive, Grey Secondary drive |

Blue end goes to MB (important that bit) and Black Primary drive, Grey Secondary drive | so,that blue, gray, black wire is better than the one that came with mb?

It is going to be an ASUS P5B instead of my MSI P965 Neo-F. The IDE Controller is a JMicron JMB363 instead of the 361. I've heard talk from some of my friends who have the same controller that some of them had these problems.
One other thing: I've tried to make the system boot without the optical drives, set all the BIOS settings to [Auto] and then replug them . Then I saw in the BIOS that both drives were being picked up as UDMA. YAY . Then i booted Windows but when i went to the devices manager, My drives mode was stuck to PIO. Now this is why it is lagging . I've tried EVERYTHING (I think). So I said screw it. I decided to get a better board with a better controller and to just reinstall windows.
But, i still have one more question: why wont your pc work with a new mobo???. Doesn<t Windows redetect the drivers automatically?

Legacy ATA did sometime have to go from MB's but did Intel have to remove it right when they did with the release of the 965 chipsets as the world & 3rd party manif's were not really ready for this big change IMHO. |
