#24 | | Guest | By "best" should we understant "best performer" or "best bang for the buck"??
Considering that the memory controller has been moved to the processor itself, performance differences between mainboards for A64's have shrunk to less than 5% (between the fastest and the slowest), so it all comes down to "what extras do you want" and "how much are you willing to pay".
The more expensive boards usually have a LOT of extra "trinkets" like firewire, 4-8 SATAs, RAID etc, and all these do take a hefty toll on the buyer.
PS: price depends on loads of other factors (how many middle-men, different resellers, taxes etc).

#27 | | Dedicated Member | | CPU: Intel Core i7 920/@4G | | | GPU: MSI N275GTX Twin Frozr | | | RAM: 3GB Corsair DDR3-1866 | | | PSU: CoolerMaster OCP 900W | | I've tried a bunch of A64 boards in the past 16 months. Most of them were nVidia chipset boards. And some were VIA. I just haven't been favorably impressed with the VIA boards. Now I'm interested in trying either a ULi or SiS chipset board. It's not that nVidia chipsets are bad it's just that I try to use nVidia based video cards with nVidia chipset boards. And some people want an ATI video card.
As for Manufacturers; Asus is considered #1, they are normally a good combination of stability and performance, Abit used to be my first choice but they've just not made really outstanding boards for the A64 that didn't come with a price premium, MSI have some nice features but I haven't found them to be as stable as they should be. If you are interested in tweaking your system and overclocking I would strongly recommend DFI.
Now Khron is right. With the memory controller on the CPU, performance doesn't differ that much between different brands. What really counts is the features you want to use. An example is: I used external HDDs and have 3 of them with Firewire/USB connectors. So I want a motherboard with Firewire for my personal use. Another example might be things like memory settings. DFI has those in spades! But most people don't want to worry about all those settings.
The problem is that I don't know what processor you want to use. Or what video card you want to use. I don't know if you want to buy new HDDs. Or if you need features like 7.1 channel sound and SPDIF out. So overall I can't recommend a good motherboard. |

SiS and ULI are two brands i don;'t like to encourage use of... my experience with them has seen 6 dead cpus and 2 dead vga cards |

#29 | | Guest | MSI is my pick
DFI is very picky with regards to Memeory, as well as PSU! But it is the best OC mobo on the planet.
ASUS is ok, not sure about their bios, somewhat problematic
