That's pretty crazy, but im guess ur 5600 AGP doesnt take much power, ur pretty lucky. I tried a few things with the card like disconnecting other optical drives such as cd rom and floppy to make the card run, but still getting some rather dodgy artifacts.

Yeah it sucks how it's voided after installing the silencer, oh well.. im gonna try the Radeon first see how that goes with the new PSU, hopefully it should run fine once i get it.

Ill keep in mind of those brands u have mentioned if i think the Radeon X8** series isn't as worth it in comparison with the GFX cards..

I found a nifty website of GPU comparisons for various cards, which kind of helped me get onto the X8** series.

Here's the link, awesome site for ppl considering of upgrading their gfx card.

and

Second one is limited, but still good.

Thumbs up

Yes, the 5600 runs off the PCI Bus without a molex supply from the PSU, how about the 6800 GS?

Am just waiting on an XFX 7800GS Extreme (440/650x2), takes forever down here in the shakey isles - New Zealand. Can't afford to go the whole upgrade of motherboard; CPU; RAM; videocard, so I'm trying to get another 18 months out of this current machine.
Thanks for the links
Good luck in the hunt for the Gremlins, or a new setup.

hehe im in the same position as u similarly, i think ill be staying with the AGP board for a while before upgrading to the PCI-Express.. hopefully i can get a little bit out of this machine before it departs.

That's a great gfx card ur awaiting, ill probably still be hunting the X800XT + whilst saving up for a brand new system.

let us know

btw thanks for the topic. it helped me to discover the source of malfunction in my raid1. THAT was due old PSU surely. While the gfx cards worked properly, 1 of the hdds erred time to time causing raid rebuild. replaced PSU with the newer one (with 2 12V lines) - and got a stable system. thanks again

No worries mate, ill let ya know how it goes with the new Antec PSU, im glad that you sorted your problem out, im sure alot of people in the world has some situation they arent sure of about how much power is allowed into a system varying components.

I was thinking before i throw my 6800GS into the bin and keeping the silencer, might give it a go in the system with the new PSU.. never know it might work lol. But if not looking for a X800XT or GTO... 7800GS is just too much, although a great card.. need to save the 200 dollars on the new mobo.

Have a look at this:

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards....1=52&card2=382

It seems that there isn't much difference between the two cards, however the pipes can be unlocked from the 7800GS to 24... the X800XL is beating the 7800GS through pixel fill rates, texture fill rates and also vertex operations.

Im looking at the X800XL with amazement. lol

I just won a new X800XT PE AGP card on ebay!! worth about 300 dollars AUD which is about 150~ USD. I think it's pretty much worth it, it's apparently has it's pros and cons, but ranges close to a 6800GT and just below a 7800GS which im pretty satisfied with. Hopefully this card wont be stuffed in comparison with the 6800 i bought a while ago.!!

Btw, can my PSU (refer to signature) run a X800XT PE? just want to make sure

Yes I would say a 450W Antec should be fine for running an X800XT PE. At the time that video card was released a 450W P/S would have been considered more than adequate. Only recently, with the growth in popularity of Dual Graphics Cards, have higher wattage power supplies been considered necessary.

I personally recommend that you save your money and purchase a up to date mobo and get a cheaper graphics card like a Nvidia 7800.

I recently upgraded from an X800 XL and my daughter in law is presently using it. It's quite an amazing card in the calibre of cards it's in. I was quite satisfied with it for over a year.

However, if I had any real choice, I'd begin to go with PCI Express upgrades. With DX 10 around the corner, I'm sure you'll feel the pain of the older models within a short time.
