CPU: Q6600 @ 3.4 Ghz
GPU: 2 x 9800GX2
M/B: XFX 780i
RAM: 4096 Corsair 800 XMS2
PSU: Galaxy 850W
Default

Memory voltage @ 1.85v default

I'm using the same PSU as before - Galaxy 850 watt

As i haven't yet overclocked my cpu, should I leave the memory speed as linked, unlinked or auto? ( is auto = linked? )

by the way, so you know, i'm also going to be asking for some advice on the best cpu settings for the overclock when i eventually get to that too - so don't be surprised!

I leave my RAM Unlinked all the time. The settings that show up for you look within spec to me. I'm running my current 4x1 GB configuration at 4-4-4-12-2T. The 2T is for the Command Rate [CR] and my mobo won't let me change it to 1T...which is what I'd like to see it at. My RAM voltage is at 2.0 V [Corrected from previous posting]. So, yours also looks to be within specs.

Didn't you say you installed Vista? If so, optimize that HDD for Performance. Open COMPUTER, right click the OS HD, select Properties at the bottom of the options, and follow the guide I'm posting below. Since this is a fresh installation, I wonder if the system is spending a lot of time trying to Index that drive. Not real sure, but possible.
That would, at least, explain the consistent HDD LED activity light flashing.

The setting I'm using is low risk for me since I have a UPS battery backup.

Yeah Dyre I did all that HDD optimising on my OS HD in windows as you outlined below but it didnt seem to make any difference. But you definitely got me thinking about my HD as the cause, so I went back to the BIOS and played around with the hard drive settings there and changed some settings relating to the HD cylinder head size.

Then I removed all the ESA tools and Nvidia drivers as well as latest mobo drivers and re-installed everything again.

I'm still not exactly sure what I did but my system seems to be working OK now

-but, I haven't had the chance to double check thoroughly and make totally sure as i've been at work so maybe there might still be a problem or the problem might come back, so stay tuned as I might still need some advice if it does come back.

Thanks again, I would probably still be scratching my head if it weren't for you guys.
