At Computex 2006, we had the chance to see a new memory module from
GeIL. EVO ONE is its name, and it is the enthusiast’s wet dream.
These days, memory plays an important role in running today’s
games and applications. However, some motherboards can be a bottleneck
when it comes to high performance memory. Most of the motherboard
manufacturers today are drawing voltage from the 3.3v rail to power
memory modules. Only one manufacturer is using the 5v rail, which
allows the user higher overclocking, and that’s DFI. Even with
DDR2, the voltage is pretty limited on many motherboards.
The fellows at GeIL have definitely proven themselves, and now they
have found a great solution for this issue. Finally someone understands
the plight of enthusiasts, and it’s not just a marketing gimmick.
GeIL’s EVO ONE is an upcoming DDR1/DDR2 memory module with an
independent power source; it means that the power will be supplied
directly from the power supply with its own adapter. The EVO ONE will
also utilize EVM (Enhanced Voltage Management) which means that you
will be able to adjust the voltage on-the-fly, with a small switch on
the memory module. So basically, with the independent power source and
EVM, you will no longer be limited by the constraints of your
motherboard. These new features will solve a lot of DDR1 issues due to
the limited voltage selection in most motherboards, and it will improve
overclocking potential. According to GeIL, the independent power source
will also improve stability due to the direct link between the memory
and power supply.
The EVO ONE is being aimed at enthusiasts and overclockers. The design
of the EVO ONE is also very impressive. GeIL worked really hard on
this, and I think they are hitting the mark with this unique product.
Let’s admit it; Visual appeal is very important to us, sometimes
it’s the most important thing, if you know what I mean…
Anyway, the idea behind it is very much like our fascination with cars,
we like them looking sweet and running fast. That is why GeIL invested
a lot of time designing this product to look good. You have to admit
that the results are very impressive. The design is simply perfect in
my opinion, I think it’s the most beautiful memory module I have
ever seen; simply a 10 out of 10.
But wait, there is more! They didn’t forget about cooling either when
it comes to the EVO ONE. Many manufacturers are just putting normal
heat-spreaders on their modules. With the EVO ONE, GeIL will be using
Aluminum heat-s(t)inks with a liquid filled copper heat-pipe with heat
grill. Good cooling is necessary for extreme overclocking, and GeIL is
obviously aware of this. So far, the EVO ONE is looking to be simply
amazing from all angles. It’s probably one of the most impressive
advances in memory design from a memory module manufacturer. Only
things left to make this product perfect are two; namely price and
performance. Only time will tell us that story. We don’t know the
estimated price or release date, but we do know that it’s pretty
soon, so keep an eye out on hardware sites for some reviews. Written by Eran Badit
