Hello Reaper. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. My problem is EXACTLY, to every detail, the same as yours. Most of the time I need to login twice, I get the same Event logs showing up when this happens, I installed the latest ATI drivers recently, and I am equally pissed at this problem and wanting to solve it no matter what.
I like your persistence!

I saw in a recent post of yours that turning off the screen saver gets rid of the problem. Well I guess we differ in that point. I tried that but i still have it. Unless I did something wrong: I changed HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\ Desktop\ScreenSaveActive value to 0.
Is there something else you did to get rid of it? This didn't solve my problem

I'm trully annoyed and I hate it when I don't know what causes my trouble. Please, if you could give me the details of how you turned off the screensaver i would appreciate I hope we find a solution to this!

Regards,
Koro

Hi folks

First I will wish you all a very Happy Christmas!

Sorry to hear about your issue Koro & I stopped the login screen saver exactly as you have but don't think its solved it anyway.

I finally bit the bullit & reinstalled xp - in fact I have installed it twice in 2 days & guess what ....I still have the login issue!!!! aghhhhhh

Having done all this I now have to assume its not a direct os issue but narrow it down to :

1. Hardware issue
2. Software Issue
3. A combination of 1 & 2
4. A horrible nightmare which it not really happening.....I wish

Perhaps if I list my hardware & software we can see if you folks with the same problem have the same set up somewhere.

So here goes -

3 User accounts - all set up as Administrators - All with passwords - although it was happening even without passwords set - just clicked on the user & it would jump back - it says loading your personal settings - then jumps back very quickly to the User accounts/login screen - not sure if it briefly says Logging Off before it jumps back.

1. Hardware

PSU - Antec True Power II 480W
Motherboard - MSI K8T (Neo Series) VIA K8T800 Chipset
CPU - AMD64 3200
120GB IDE Hard Disk Drive (8mb buffer)
1.5 GB RAM - 3 Sticks of 512MB DDR RAM 400MHz
Graphics Card - MSI X800XT Platinum Edition 256MB DDR3 - Running Cats 6.12 without Catalyst Control Centre
Sony DVD RW DRU-510A
Sony CDRW CRX230E
Soundcard - Creative Soundblaster Audigy ZS
Creative Inspire P580 5.1 Speakers
Monitor - Iiyama 19" Prolite E483S
Miscrosoft wireless Keyboard & mouse
NTL Broadband modem with ethernet connection

2. Software

Windows XP Home - updated with all critical updates up to SP2
Norton Internet Security 2006 - Up to date with updates
Norton Ghost 10.0 - Up to date with updates
Internet Explorer 6
Outlook Express 6
Adobe Reader 7.0.8
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Windows Installer 3.1
Wndows live Messenger

Thats about it I think - so anyone have any the same hardware or software as me installed on their system?

Cheers for now

How did you reinstall it? It may still be an OS issue; if something is misconfigured in the registry, who knows, if you reinstalled in a way that keeps previous configuration, it still could be the OS.

I, on my part, refuse to reinstall windows since I'm sure there *must* be a solution and we *have* to find it

You mentioned that when you uninstalled a late version of ati catalyst the problem was gone. Are you pretty sure of that? If so, we have a big piece of information there, and it suggests it is either a conflict of windows with the later catalyst or something bogus in catalyst.

I think the keys here are 1) ati catalyst 2) the error logs that show up in the event viewer. They mention a path to a piece of the source code of something (some component of windows); that's pretty strange, i think. Maybe we should try and post to some forum in microsoft technet and see what we get.

I will list my hardware/software to compare with yours.

I have 2 user accounts only, one set to Admin and the other normal. Only the admin one with password.

1. Hardware : Acer aspire 5672WLMi
PSU Acer (?)
Motherboard: Acer Bodensee - Intel 945PM express chipset
CPU: Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66 GHz
HDD: 120GB 5400 rpm SATA Samsung HM120JI
RAM: 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM (2 512 MB Slots)
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (128 MB - 512 MB shared) - Mobile Catalyst 6.11 without CCC (I'm going to update soon to 6.12)
DVD: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K06R
Camera: Acer Orbicam (Logitech)
Infrared: SMSC IrCC
Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Bluetooth Broadcom
Soundcard: (?) Realtek High Definition Audio
Network Card: Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet

2. Software

Windows XP Home - updated with all critical updates up to SP2
Comodo Firewall
Nero 7 Premium
Internet Explorer 6
Firefox 2.0.0.1
Thunderbird 1.5.0.9
Adobe Reader 7.0.8
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 with hotfix KB886903
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

More stuff that is probably irrelevant.

Here's a detail that might be relevant -who knows-. I installed a microsoft hotfix which was not yet released (at least when i instaled it) to avoid a conflict between my previous antivirus (Kaspersky internet security) and games that used Punkbuster. Since the fix was not "official" yet (you had to call to M$ support to get it) it may be related to this problem, if you recall having installed something like that let me know.

That's all I can think of.

Best wishes.

Hi

Koro - thanks for the update - I reinstalled xp with a recovery cd as its all I have, don't have a stand alone version of xp, the process does involve deleting the original partition & creating a new one so I am sure the old registry etc has been replaced.

I am also reluctant to reinstall the os & only see it as a last resort, but I also figured the less clutter I had running on my pc the easier it might be to try to establish what was causing this problem.

I was running with Cat drivers up to 6.4 both on my current ATI card & with my previous one (ATI 9800 All in Wonder) without any signs of this problem also a day or so ago I stopped the login screensaver again & I'm just letting the monitor power down after 15 mins, so far I have not had the jump back issue but knowing the history of this its still early days.

If things stay the same on my system I would say its seems to be an issue with the more recent Cats (6.5 onwards) & whatever process goes on (system wise) when the pc comes out of the login screensaver.

I have posted this issue on 2 or 3 forums so far & this is the only one that has come back with "sensible" comments but I am happy to give this ms technet a try - I will search it out & get it posted asap.

Hardware/software wise it looks like we really only have ATI & Cats in common, not sure about the update you mention I have only updated downloads under the critical title (there was 61 updates at one point to download) & I must admit I didnt have the whatsit to sit & scan through all 61 to see what they did

I have scanned the net since this issue appeared for an answer or info on the event log - Apllication - Event System - Category (50) - Event 4614 but so far no joy but it is listed the same every time this issue happens.

Anyway let me have you thoughts etc

Cheers

Hello again

Checked out the MS Technet site - Looks daunting - how/where do you post your problems?

Just a hunch but do you have XP Update KB902400 installed?

Cheers

By the way - so far no login jump back since 24.12.06 -

Hi folks

The issue returned!!!

Sat until 1am this morning reinstalling xp again - third time!

Decided to just run with no updates downloaded so with bare min installed the only software I have installed & updated is Norton Internet Security 2006 with updates to current.

But still running Cats 6.12.

What a surprise - the login jump back issue is with me once again!

Aghh what does this tell me - surely its got to be the Cats - hasn't it?

I like a challenge as much as the next person but not much more I can do apart from run with older Cats or put up with the annoyance of the jump back I guess.

Still open to ideas though

Cheers

Just for the heck of it, check this:

Go to START, Control Panel, double click on User Accounts.

Now, open the Change the Way Users Log On and Off

When that opens up, make sure the Checkmark Boxes are blank. Close everything and see if you still have this issue. You can return this to it's default state after some testing if you want.

You're right, i think Technet is not the place to ask. I recall seeing some forum to ask such questions that belonged to microsoft, but i can't find it now.
Anyway, the good news is that I havent had the problem for like one week.
I think it ceased after i installed the latest catalyst. did you install the very last version?

I have had this issue and I've always had both the welcome screen and the secondary logon turned off, so this seems to be unrelated to it.

Hi

Thanks for the updates = At the moment I have my fingers crossed!

After the 3rd re-install of xp but without any updates being downloaded I was still getiing the jump back issue - there was one thing I hadn't tried in the previous re-installs & that was to download & install the latest VIA Hyperion Pro drivers for my motherboard, one of which controls the AGP socket (I think).

I was still running the old motherboard drivers when this issue first appeared & had never bothered to update them.

That was coming up to 2 days ago & with the login screensaver running & Cat 12 drivers installed, I have not had one instance of the jump back & the pc is running very stable, booting up & closing down quickly (was noticing it was quite slow on shut down - sometimes hanging at the "saving your settings" screen).

Typing this could be the kiss of death & I have yet to download any xp updates but I guess its just possible the more recent cat drivers benefit from the latest motherboard drivers being used.

I would really welcome your thoughts on my theory - What do you think folks?

Cheers

Hi

As usual I had spoken too soon & the problem has started up again.

Well I have now downloaded every possible xp update just to see if it improved things & it didnt.

I know when I'm beat so have decided after all I have gone through it can only be that my graphics card does not like any drivers above a certain age.

I don't beleive it can be anything else now & if thats the case then nothing I can do apart from put up with it or run on older drivers.

Anyway I am sure I have taken up enough of everyone's time with this I am not happy that I havn't resolved it but hey thats life!

Cheers & Happy New Year to you all.
