Hi

I'm still around, one thing I have discovered is my issue does not happen at all if I disable the login screen saver.

I disabled it in the registry & just set the monitor to power down after 5 mins - over the last 2 days I have had no issues with logging in to my user account.

I know I could just leave the system like this but like a dog with a bone I carn't! at least not yet - Assuming the file(s) relating to the login screensaver & what happens when you come out of are in some way corrupt etc - any ideas how I can repair/replace them?

I only have an XP recovery disk not a stand alone version.

Cheers

Well, I've pretty much said from day one that it was related to the Screensaver login. This seems to be 'the way it's meant to be' whenever you have a login setup for the screensaver. In theory anyway, when the system goes into the Screensaver, anyone who attempts to bring the system back up will have to have the screensaver password. That, by design, will be the same password for everyone who uses the computer. So, when you bring up the system from the Screensaver using that particular password, the system NOW wants to know which account to open. So, you have to then use the user account password to get to that user's Desktop.

I seem to recall having a similar situation a couple of years ago and decided to stop using a password to bring the system up from the Screensaver. In fact, I don't even use screensavers anymore. I just have set my system to not show Desktop Icons and use a black background.

What is strange is that, according to the earlier posts, it doesn't happen with all driver version for your video card. So, maybe there's a .NET issue involved.

Have you tried this now with the new CAT 6.12?

An Update and maybe something else to check:

I just went through installing Windows XP Pro fresh again. So, I'm having to go through all my settings and preferences, updates, etc. One thing I do almost immediately is to turn OFF the screensaver and check the Power Settings. I keep my monitor from going into Standby mode for my own particular purposes.

So, I was doing this and came across this setting again and wondered if you've checked it out recently:

NOTICE in the second image there's a check mark to Prompt for a Password. Make sure it's unchecked on your system.

Hi

Thanks again for the info Dyre.

Checked out the settings from your images & set as you suggested - no change I'm afraid.

Installed 6.12 Cats - No Change issue still with me.

Just going back to you comment about password protected screensaver- bear with me on this - I understood there was 2 types of screensaver on xp - one which kicks in when you are logged into your user account & leave alone for a set lengh of time (set up from your first screen image - mine looks identical to your by the way) & the other was the login screensaver set up from the registry.

Ok - assuming I have no screensaver set up of the first type - can the login screensaver be password protected from within the registry? - sorry if thats what you were trying to tell me

Cheers for now

Reaper: We haven't forgotten you.

I'm not sure at all if this will be of use, but, take a look at the info here:

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/112/

I've never had any problems with a 'login screensaver'. That may be due to the fact that I'm the only user ever on my computer. If someone else wants to use a computer, they get their own.

Hi Reaper. I am a newbie

If look at you've been discussing there should be some strange things behind it
- .netframework mostly has nothing to do with the problem - not that I know.
- had been through the same thing --> found malware/adware in hidden folder "system volume information" (inaccessible if NTFS) but detectable by panda rescue disk --> just go to system property then disable system restore then back on after a little moment.
- Make sure you get a true complementary ATI driver and CCC --> if previously using older version try to uninstall using ATI uninstall utility (s'times it behaves strangely, but it works)
That is what I did, and its work to me.

Selamat

Hi

Thanks for the link Dyre I will check it out & report.

caturbudi - welcome & thanks for joining the topic - can you give a little more help on the advice you are giving - I understand stopping the system restore - but not sure what else I am supposed to do - I am running Norton AV & have Adaware & Spybot installed - are you saying stop system restore- run a sweep with Norton,Adaware Spybot & then switch on system restore again?

If so what will that have done?

If I've got it wrong can you explain please.

Thanks again

Hi Reaper.
Sorry for being away for few days.
Here is what happenned to mine.
When ad/malware detected in syst.info.folder mostly it will automatically be deleted when syst.restore is disabled. But we s'time do not know whether these ad/mal/virus(es) have already taking control of our PC's behavior or not. if so, then we may have to clean install the OS and having the partition deleted and repartitioned prior to instalation to make sure that the folder is steril.
If you managed to get the latest Panda bootable rescue disk then you may have opportunity to check your disk out.
If there is no ad/mal/virus(es) found, then it could be s'thing else. Course we have to ask more people on this.
Just give a try. I've been working peacefully with my PC since I combined ZoneLab firewall, Panda titanium (w firewall disabled), and rock the game with my ATI card with its CCC.
Selamat.
