Can not beleive I am the only pc user out there with this issue, not as if I have some unusual system/set up etc.

Oh well back to the drawing board.
By any chance do you have Windows Media Player setup to automatically startup and download content?

Also, how many programs and which ones do you have set to automatically start with Windows? Do any of these have to make a connection to the Internet?

Hi - Thanks Dyre

Going to be dim here but - Well I have windows media player installed but not sure how to check if it set to start up automatically & download content - sorry how do I check that?

Also have a fair few items that start up (under msconfig) but again not sure how to check if they connect to the internet? - one I know does is Norton Internet Security 2006 which I am running as it checks for updates etc.

Sorry about having to be spoon fed here!

Can I ask what your train of thought might be?

Was thinking about things I had done on the pc recently that not done before & one thing was to back up the whole drive on an external hard drive that I bought - could that have caused any problems do you think?

Cheers for now

In some of the research I've done on this I came across others having a problem whereby they have to enter their password twice if Media Player/Center is set up to run automatically. But, that only seems to affect the Media Player/Center.

What I'm inclined to suggest is that you enter Windows and reset your personal password to NO password at all at least temporarily. You can do that easily following the prompts for your Username and then Change Password. This 'may' eliminate the need to enter your password entirely....which is what we'd expect.

See if that works and post back.

(Just in case, to get to your User Account, go to the Control Panel and double click on User Accounts.)

Hi DS

Set my user profile up with NO password & let system go to login screensaver - moved the mouse & login screen came up - just clicked on my profile & desktop booted up ok on first click every time for 10 attempts.

The went back & entered the password as "1" - first attempt at login from login screensaver did the jump back thing!

So does this tell us that there is an intermittant issue with verifying the passwords ? or something else?

Really need password protection on users profiles as 3 of us in the family use the pc.

Thanks again

Sounds like it to me. Like you, I'd be annoyed, but, maybe some annoyances we just have to learn to live with, huh?

Hi

Thanks for your comments, like to think every problem has a solution, even though it may not always be obvious what it is.

I am going to carry on with my search for an answer to this, who knows maybe I can help someone out in the future with the same issue.

Just want to thank you all for your continued help & time, especially Dyre & Mac D great to know in this crazy world there are still folk out there who are willing to help another they don't even know with a problem.

Of course you do realise if I get another problem it will be you guys I contact

Thanks again folks & keep up the great work.

Just so you know: You have to wait at least 30 days between new problems. J/K!

Hi everyone!

I found this forum and this thread on Google.

No, you are not the only one with this problem. I have a very similar (or even identical) problem.

My operating system is Windows 2003 with 3 personal user accounts. I don't use any screensavers, but I log out and log into the system regularly - the computer runs 24 hours a day. The annoying issue is like yours: every time (literally: EVERY TIME) I log into the system, I need to log twice. After the first attempt the login screen disappears and the welcome sound plays, but I am immediatelly moved back to the login screen. The second attempt is always successful.

Here are similarities I find in our cases:
- the operating system: Windows 2003 is almost identical with XP,
- I installed new ATI drivers recently; I don't remember which version it was before, I could check it out at home,
- I installed and uninstalled .NET Framework 2.0 recently.

Anyway, I have no idea how to get rid of that problem.
