Cheers for now

RE: ASP.NET:

Newer versions of .NET Framework do not create this account. If it were mine, I'd delete this account. If you do need any of the features you can always reinstall the appropriate .NET framework for it.

Since there are several user accounts on this computer, my suspicion that the screensaver and standby modes are logging off the current user seem to be on target. As long as there are this many users, I think the login situation will remain.

Hi

Thanks again

Uninstalled that .NET user profile & afraid the problem remains.

I created a new TEST user profile with password just to see if it still does it with a brand new account & it does - not sure what that told me though.

Funny this is the first PC issue in a good number of years that I havent bee able to crack & very few mentions of this or very similar issues on the web.

I'm not one for giving up easily but not sure what else I can do apart from going back to Cats 6.2 which for some unknown reason I never had a login issue on any of my user accounts with - thats what started me off thinking it was a drivers issue.

Well thanks for all your help & effort really appreciated it if you think of anything else please let me know.

Cheers for now

Uninstalled .NET V 2 (only one shown in the add remove programes area) - problem remains.

Under User Accounts I have 5 shown - 3 are for family members - one is shown as Guest & the final one is ASP.NET Machine A...

This final one - should it be there? looks a bit odd to me.

Came across this on one of my searches - can you check it out please & let me know what you think? - I know it refers to XP Pro but just wondered.

Simply put - No you do not need either the "ASP.NET..." or "Guest" Accounts. If you have doubts, just create a System Restore Point, then delete them and reboot. If deletion of these accounts causes you issues, then you only have to revert to that "restore point" to recover.

BTW, that ASP.NET Machine A... account was created by the original install of .NET, and the Guest account is primarilly for compatibility with Windows 2000 systems on the same network.

Personally I would recommend a fresh OS reinstall, but I understand that the risks of loosing some data are rather high and the whole process will take alot of time (especially with multiple user accounts). In order to help with the reload process I would suggest download of a program called Autopatcher. It's really a tremendous aid in getting all the updates installed. However, it does require the installation of SP2 first to work.

Hi guys

Afraid not had any luck sorting this despite all your help & advice.

Looks like I will have to accept defeat this time - you win some .......

Did come across this link - sorry to be a pain but can you take a look & let me know if its worth pursuing - looks like I have to contact MS for this fix - but it does sound a bit like my issue - then again maybe I'm starting to hallucinate

Is it worth uninstalling/reinstalling sp2?

Cheers

actually the guest account is primarily for Guest users to logon to your machine without being able to modify settings and files.

Windows 2000 can still login into XP by creating a remote desktop user account

Hi guys

Got an update for you - decided to make a change to the registry in the SCRNSAVE.EXE file - changed the default entry - Logon.scr to ssmyst.scr so I now have the mystify screensaver as my login screensaver.

At the time of typing this I have logged in 7 times from the screensaver being in action & all 7 times its booted straight to desktop!

Could this be the answer? - can you have a damaged screensaver file?

Cheers for now.

Sounds like you're onto something. I would say it's quite possible to get a damaged screensaver file.

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Spoke too soon - again!

8th time (& 9th) login & its jumping back again - how can this be, was going great guns.

Can not beleive I am the only pc user out there with this issue, not as if I have some unusual system/set up etc.

Oh well back to the drawing board.
