Not sure about installing the Control Panel now - is it possible that my PC will not run the new Catalyst Control Centre but will be ok with the older Control Panel? - if thats so why do you think that might be?

Thanks again you have been a great help & hopefully I am on the way to sorting this.

Cheers
If you ran the default installation for the ones MacDaddy gave you, you should already have the old Control Panel. To find out, just right click anywhere on the Desktop and then select Properties at the bottom of the popup menu. If you then see a Settings tab, click on that, and then on the Advanced button near the bottom. If you then see all the tabs for Displays, Options, etc, you have the old CP.

Is your computer up-to-date using Windows XP SP2? Do you have all the latest Updates for it...including .NET framework 2.0 and -- just recently released, .NET Framework 3.0?
If you don't have the latest updates, this could be the cause for your problems.

Glad to see, though, that there's been some improvement.

Ditto on that Dyre and REAPER as my Bro said the old CP should be there. The new CCC causes certain issues as Dyre mentioned make sure your XP is updated too SP2 AND .NET framework is very important

Hi guys

Looks like I spoke too soon! - The login issue remains I'm afraid

Yes I have the old style Control Panel installed thanks.

I will check to make sure I have all the latest XP SP2 updates & report back - should I install everything that the updates show ? - Critical & Suggested ones?

Running .NET v 2 but didnt realise v 3 was out - Do you have to have all the verisions installed or just the most recent? - will check that out & again report back.

Cheers for now

I don't necessarily install the Suggested updates unless I'm convinced I need those. In fact, I've had Windows try to tell me I needed hardware drivers for a device that wasn't even installed on my system! So, watch those suggested ones carefully. (In my case, I was using an onboard RealTek Audio controller and Windows kept wanting to update my 'C-Media' device. It won't work!)

But, do make sure you have all the critical stuff.

Also, only .NET 1.1 or 2.0 is required for the CCC to work. You don't need either for the old CP.

Hello again

Checked out the updates -only critcial one was to install Internet Explorer V 7 - so I installed that.

Under the optional ones there are 5 :

Update for windows xp (KB920342)
Update for windows xp((KB896344)
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1
Update for WMDRM-Enabled Media Players (KB891122)
Microsoft Base Smart CArd Cryptographic Service PRovider PAckage X86 (KB909520)

Not installed any of these yet - what do you think?

Seems like the login issue is intermittant now - so maybe the drivers I have installed have improved things a bit - not sure if it would make a difference but when I install new drivers I DONT do it in safe mode just ordinary boot up - I know Dyre mentioned earlier about installing in safe mode - should I give that a try?

Thanks again

I would do the driver installation in Safemode. There just may be something that is protecting some files and you need to install in Safemode to get the drivers to install like they need to. If you're going to install the same drivers, don't bother uninstalling them first now. Just go to Safemode and run the installation again. This will force the drivers to overwrite whatever files need to be overwritten.

Hi

Not sure what just happened - didnt uninstall crrent drivers & booted into safe mode ran the install program again for the drivers - it started to install etc then a message box came up - said in the top left hand corner Severe - then tect underneath read :

Set up did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system set up will now exit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Uninstall in safe mode as Dyre suggested ... go too the Folder the drivers where installed into and remove that too. Run a reg cleaner to remove all traces of the driver from the registry ...

Then reboot and reinstall the drivers fresh
