Default HELP! Nervous to update my Evil Master Radeon 9600 driver

I have Evil Master Radeon 9600 at only lately it has freezed and hanged on me. its even getting more frequent! So Im planning to update its driver using Catalyst 6.3 version CP. problem is...

1. to install using CP, do we still hafta uninstall ALL ATI old drivers n utilitiies as well? basically i can't find any installation process explanations on CP.

2. im planning to use 6.3 instead of the latest 6.9 coz i read a testimonial saying 6.9 only works on X series. what do u guys think?

3. at ATI website, they asked us to register our product so that they can give the drivers which suit our cards (esp those manufactured by ATI's partners). But my Evil Master's not listed! is the drivers provided in NGOHQ can b used for my Evil Master Radeon 9600??

HELPPP! This is my first time updating the driver since i bought it on December 2003. So I'm nervous! So thank you in advance for everybody's help

First of all: Greetings and Welcome to NGOHQ!

You do not need to be afraid or nervous.

Since you are updating the drivers for the first time in a very long time, it's important to find out what other system specs you have. What motherboard, CPU, how much and what kind of RAM memory? So, do give us that information ASAP.

All Radeon Cards will use the unified ATi Drivers and all cards beginning with the 9550 series are supported with the latest ATI drivers....including CATALYST 6.9. HOWEVER, several users with other than X1000 series cards have been reporting issues beginning with 6.7.

Personally, I'd encourage you to use the NGO Optimized ATI drivers 1.6.6. These are the same as CAT 6.6 drivers and have worked quite well on my own rig. I also installed them recently on another system that has a 9600 series card.

AND, yes, it's quite important to uninstall everything related to ATI prior to doing an update. You can uninstall things using the ADD/REMOVE option in the Windows Control Panel. Do NOT reboot until everything is Uninstalled. You'll get some prompts to Restart but don't do so until all ATI-related software is removed. (If you have MMC installed you will NOT have to uninstall it!) We're talking Display Drivers/Control Panel/WDM drivers only!

Once you get these uninstalled, reboot and let Windows redetect your video card.

Once that's done, install the drivers of your choice.

Good luck! and be sure to let us know the result.

That's as good a list as any.

The MMC is the ATI Multimedia Center. It's included for DVD playback and for cards that have TV IN and/or VIVO.

Now, off to update.....

sorry for the late reply! was occupied with other matters. anyway i managed to update my driver using NGO ATI optimized driver. BUT unfortunately i still get the occasional freezes n hangs

i've come to realize that it might not be my g.cards all along. other than the freezes n hangs, my mobo also been setting off its temperature alarm. i decided to update my g.card driver coz i thought the extra heat was produced by my g.card. but now im considering, maybe my g.card's prob due to the overheating of my cpu. uwaaaaaa im so lost!

the 'hi temp' setting at the Fan EQ is at 60celcius but my cpu temp is actually 79 celcius MINIMUM! its always at 80-85celcius on REGULAR basis! whats causing my cpu to overheat???!!

oh yes, the minute i install ABIT Micro Guru (a windows-based interface to monitor power supply voltage, cpu n sytem fans speed n temperature - ABIT EQ, ABIT OC Guru, ABIT FlashMenu, ABIT Fan EQ, ABIT Black Box) which comes along my ABIT AN7, my mobo's temp alarm goes off endlessly n shuts down my pc automatically that i had to uninstall em and adjust some settings in BIOS for it to keep quite! also, i managed to peek into the ABIT EQ n guess what? its not detecting my system fan! other than that, cpu fan-1800rpm and nb fan-4500rpm.

HELPPP! need everybody's help pls...if the forum's operator need to move this thread to other discussion, by all means pls...TQ in advance

Make sure that your CPU Cooler is sitting correctly and reapply thermal paste. If it's not helping, consider to add more case fans and replace the current CPU Cooler.

but what's causing it to overheat suddenly?? from december 2005 till may 2006 i was doing real heavy graphics work and animation for my university final-year-project using adobe softwares (after effects, photoshop, illustrator, premiere pro) and even alias wavefront maya. most of the times running 3-4 of these softwares at one time but i didnt face any overheating, freezes, alarm goin off or hangs THEN.

now my system freezes on me even when i perform basic simple task in adobe photoshop n when im playing Bejeweled 2 (n this game is like what? tip of the iceberg of those heavy 3d games u gamers play??)

maybe my cpu cooler is just getting old? could virus cause hardware to fail this much? would reformat help? or reinstall mobo itself?
