Post just bought a x850 xt

found a brand new x850xt for $250 after $50 mail-in at microcenter. gonna put it in later this week but i really dont feel like formatting. upgrading from a 9800pro. gonna do the usual whenever i install a new graphics driver - uninstall everything, reboot w/modem off, driver cleaner, manual delete ati files in sys32, reboot, then install drivers. hopefully everything goes well. what do you think? i'm sure it'll be fine as everytime i update or install new drivers it "finds" the 9800pro as new hardware. maybe i'll uninstall the 9800 in device manager too. good idea?

I think its pretty safe to use uninstall, then go to safemode, then use driver cleaner. Thats what I did when I upgraded to the same card from the same card and I'm doing fine.

there shouldnt be any problem uninstalling your old card via safe mode ,using driver cleaner .

anyway's I would still recommend you to format and install a nice and clean os ..
trouble free and you can be sure to get the most out of your new GPU .

If both products are BUILT BY ATI then you should be able to simply swap out cards with out uninstalling anything. I did the same swapping out a 9600 (non pro) and 9800 pro over and over for troubleshooting and the ati drivers didn't need reinstalling.
