Default any ideas why my vdo card is running way hotter then before?

ok here is the deal, i have a 1 month old 6600gt OC at 550/1125 that use to idle at 46-48C

in the last 2 days i swapped a old HDD with a new one which runs a bit hotter then the old one, but just a tiny bit.

i cleaned my CPU heatsink and fan, and I OC my CPU from 2.4ghz to 3.0ghz, normal temps at idle before OC was 35-36C, after OC temps became 37-37.5C according to the BIOS - Asus Probe shows it running at 27C after OC (dunno why, think its not reading the rite info from the BIOS)

with all these thing done, my vdo card temp according to the temp settings in the nvidia driver is showing 54-55C idle, but when i removed my case and touch the vdo card itself, it doesnt feel anywhere close to 55C, its rather cool.

with the increase in temps from the CPU and the new HDD i would understand if the temps rose to 50, but 55 i feel is way higher then it should be considering that after touching the card itself it doesnt feel nearly as hot as the temps are showing.

anyone have any ideas why? LOL

here are my specs:

p4 2.4ghz @ 3.0ghz
DDR PC3200 1g 400mhz
6600gt OC @ 550/1100 (used rivatuner)

any help would be much appreciated

edit: oh even when i bring the vdo card back down to normal settings 500/1000, the card is still reading 54-55C

nope the same, i just switched out one HDD for another, but i did move the new HDD to another position tho, apart from the other one to help keep it cool.

also another thing i switched my side fan from blowing hot air out to blowing cool air in, since i only got 1 case fan, but even if i take out my side panel the temps are same.

i just dont really get why the temps are reporting 55C but when i touch the card it doesnt feel anywhere close to 55C.

room temp is normal haha, actually its a bit colder then before since the temps are dropping now haha

maybe ill try to revert everything back to the way it was before and then check the temps then.

This has been an issue with the Nvidia Temp reader(wacky readings). 55C sounds right for a 500/1000 oc.

well idle its running at 54C rite now at 550/1100. should drop the temps more when its at nite.

i think i found out whats wrong haha, i changed my side case fan back from blowing cool air in to sucking hot air out and my vdo card temps dropped to about 51C which sounds about rite aftering OCing and getting a hotter HDD.

however my CPU temps did jump up after changing since the side fan is directly over the CPU so by blowing cool air in rite on top of the CPU fan and heatsink it helps a lot.

with fan blowing out CPU temps are 40-41C and vdo card temp is 51C, with fan blowing in CPU temps is between 38-38.5C and the vdo card temp is 53-54C. (all temps are at idle)

which settings do you guys think i should go with? im thinking having the cool air blow in and the CPU is running cooler and then GPU is running hotter, what do you guys think?

There was a review when they first came out about the heat sink fan not being attached well as it only has 2 points of attachment to the board on most cards. Some cards use custom heat sinks with better attachment they warned about bumping or hitting it during install as it would loosen and not make good contact. They recommended centain brands not sure which ones. It could have been Tom's Hardware site but im not sure of it as its been some time ago I was thinking of getting one of those cards. Im not sure thats your problem as i would think the temp would be way higher just something to keep in mind or look into if temp starts going higher.

well i've decided!!

im going to keep my fan blowing cool air in, to help with my CPU, but i order a Zalman VF700 Copper HSF for my vdo card!! damn why did i ever get into overclocking haha just wastes more money ; ;

however i got a question about applying arctic silver 5 tho.

i never used arctic silver 5 before so im totally lost about it, here goes the questions LOL any help would be great.

1. how do you safely remove the thermal paste from the GPU and CPU without using a solution?
2. how do you apply arctic silver 5 on? just put a bit in the center and press the heat sink down on it to let it spread out by itself? or do you just spread out a thin layer over the top of it and then put the heatsink on?
3. (noob question) i was reading that arctic silver 5 takes a few days to become stable and hard, once it does this, is it stll possible to remove the HSF? or does it become permanently stuck on?

last one i swear!! My brother just got a new HSF for his Intel Prescott, I was wondering would the method to apply the arctic silver 5 for the CPU be the same as the GPU?

thanks for the help again ^^

edit: found the info dont need help with this anymore
