ATI tray tool works great. I can't imagine needing anything else.

Is there some other method of setting the fan sped on 4870 other then that through the CCC? Because that's the main reason I use that bloated piece of "software".

Sticking to the "check NGOHQ's forms every few months and forget about it in the time in-between" method has made it difficult for me to pipe in on this subject. By the time I make it to someone's topic it's usually locked, and I'm never making a topic of my own for it. So with that aside, I'm piping in.

Dear Internet: Is it so hard to not be twelve years old when you bring this stuff up? Here's an example of how you can ask this question without sounding like someone who can't scrounge up the two bills to buy an Nvidia card (because seriously, is losing Catalyst that important if you can?):

Topic Subject: Hey Reg, any news on PhysX?
Topic Text: Hey man, I'm sorry to be the 100th person asking thing, but is there any news on the whole physx thing? Is Ati being a douche and blocking development? Was it just dropped? (Can't say I'd blame you, the market for PhysX is pretty slim as it is, never mind that for a free PhysX driver) Just asking as one of the folks who were pretty stoked when we first heard about this; it's probably the coolest Ati news since the whole Dawn demo fiasco

You don't even have to go that far. Just be civil. If at any point, lack of news on this is making you angry, that's your brain's way of telling you that you're checking up on it too bloody often and must honestly not have much else better to do with your time. I mean, it's not that serious. You forget about it, check whenever you remember, and if it's up, w00t. If not, you go on with your life. If some killer game that uses PhysX to an extraordinary degree gets released, (let's be honest, there's not much out there save for a benchmark, a couple games, and that Cellfactor demo. Heck, that last one doesn't even work on Nvidia's brand of PhysX if I recall correctly) then accept that Ati's board doesn't support PhysX. Get an Nvidia board or hope that something of similar quality comes out of the whole AMD/Havok agreement. Or get off your lazy butt and code a Bullet backend for AMD chips.

Peace.

p.s. Sorry for the Wiki link, Reg, but it's useful for a quick snippet of info

first i need to enable TEST MOD for it to work in x64 OS and forcing never works like it dose in NVIDIA. and the menus are like ccc. It is not one screen where it should be easy to put check marks. but the main and only reason that i am asking is to force multisampling to get better FPS and Lod adjustment is not working properly on ATI tray tool. and FAN control... ? i know u can do a real good job of providing a tool for ATI fans including overclocking fan control and forcing different settings. + a game profile. which works.....

Having just dealt with the lack of per-app profile on Catalyst, I have to say, I really doubt that "fixing" that is trivial. Chances are Nvidia (just like Wacom in their Intuos driver) has app detection. e.g. reading to see if the window that's currently in focus belongs to a particular program, and making changes accordingly.

I REALLY doubt you can just "hack" that into the Catalyst driver without some MAJOR work. It's not a registry key, guy.

Edit note: Also Reg, after taking a glance at the preview video for Mirror's Edge with PhysX enhancements, I can see why so many Ati users are frothing at the mouth for an update from you Fortunately, I've got a spare Geforce 8600 so I can make do (apparently, there's a mix-'n-match hack for XP) until the day arrives that Ati cuts the stupid red tape and lets you finish. I wonder if a Windows OpenCL port will sidestep this whole mess.

And i would like to make it clear. if its registry, i don't need anyone's help. i am a trainer @ Microsoft and i can do anything on windows. i can even work with the .sys but not that good like our friend here. he is the expert . and its better to leave big work to experts. and ATI CAT do have profile and the problem is it tries to give quality than performance. i do remember reading a article saying renaming a file to get better score, its a benchmark program. its because of the AI which automates the profile loading. so it can be done and since our friend here is working with the driver with guess work, the can do it

I dont need a spare 8500 or a 8600. i get 63 FPS with Mirror's Edge @1680x1050 and i run tweaked physix on CPU and is going good. only thing is it uses 55 to 65% of my CPU (AMD 9850 @3.1GHz zlman) A bit worried about my CPU... but looking to change it once i see a fixed AMD denab DDR3
