Default Black screen on boot on a 8800GT after driver install

Hi,
I am having problems with the nvidia drivers as many others on the web, but havent been able to find a solution. Maybe someone here have any idéas.

My problem: As soon as I install any nvidia driver (I have tried with all drivers I could find from 163.75 to 175.16) the installation goes fine but at reboot I pass the windows loading bar but before I get the windows spash animation it goes black. It flickers a few times, some drivers loose the screen completely leaving it toggling between analog and digital, but most hangs on a black screen with a few colored pixels in short lines on the top side of the screen.

The NGO optimized driver produces the same effect.

After this I can only reboot by hard power off, but recovery vga mode still works with software acceleration.

My installation procedure is: uninstall latest driver, reboot, driver cleaner and then install, reboot, hang. I have no other periferial attached but mouse and keyboard (one usb, one ps2). Screen is a 24 inch Samsung 245B.

Everything works fine if I use my old Radion X850, but as I now have an XpertVision nvidia 8800GT, it would be nice to use it.

My system:
OS = Windows vista ultimate x86
Motherboard = ASROCK 775Dual-VSTA, Latest bios 3.10
CPU = Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 @2.13 MHz
Mem = 2GB
DirectX version = 10
GPU (card) = XpertVision nvidia 8800 GT
PS: I have also downgraded the card to Gen 1 as this works better with the MSI crap chipset which lets it all start and work but still no luck with the driver. Others who have done this claim that it does work.

I would love some advice on this... hopefully I am on the right forum?
I hope I supplied relevant information.
Cheers,

You forgot to mention what your power supply is. (I suspect this may be the culprit)

My PSU is a LC Power Silent Giant LC6420G, 420W PSU but I dont know the combined 12V ampere.

I am currently running 32bit version of Vista. Sorry if I stated something wrong.

I thought the power requirement for the card wouldnt show at boot since I could power on and run it in safe mode?

Thanks alot for your replys.

With power supplies that is not always the case. Sometimes you'll be able to power on and even install drivers and experience loss of display in the middle of a game for example, at other times the system won't display at all. If it's possible test your current system with a better power supply.

well it is strange that your board would support your new gpu
asrock uses x4 PCIE and that gpu is not also on support list
(i dont trust that 8800GT can support PCIE x4)

I just read on different sites ppl who have gotten this card to run fine on this mobo. Though I also read that it has to be PCIE x8??? How can I check what kind of pcie I am running. Or is that up to reading the specs of the board?

Ill reinstall windows and try that. By the way the PSU should be able to hand me the 28A needed on the +12V. But does it matter whether its on a single rail or not? Do I need to do something with the cables? God I sound like such a newb haha

Thnx a lot though for your input.

If you still have the mobo's manual it should be in there I you're able to run gpuz (which seems unlikely) that would give you the info you need as well. As for the rail question, it doesn't need to be on a single rail. I'm not sure what you mean about doing something to the cables, leave those poor things alone.
